This song was released in 1961 in Japan and 1963 in the US. It's really popular amongst older British people. my dad likes it :P

Interpretation of the lyrics of the song

The lyrics tell the story of a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears won't fall. The verses of the song describe his memories and feelings
It has nothing to do with sukiyaki.
