Meetings in 2011/2012
All the meetings are normally held on Thursdays weekly. In 2012 we will meet in Room 11.01 at David Hume Tower of the University of Edinburgh from 7.30 to 9pm. The committee meeting will be held in Room 9.14 from 7 to 7.30pm.

This new poster for the Japanese Singing Group has been made by Mr Mark Donoghue, our art director, graduate of Glasgow School of Art.
日本語合唱団のこの新しいポスターは、グラスゴウ芸術大学の卒業生であり、合唱団の美術責任者であるマーク・ドノヒューさんによるものです。
Background
The Japanese Singing Group was set up in 2009 by Atsuko Betchaku who hopes to set up the Japanese Institute of Scotland in order to help Japanese and introduce Japanese culture in our multicultural society. The group aims to sing Japanese songs together and to create a community beyond national boundaries.
背景
日本人を助け、多文化社会の中で日本文化を紹介していくためのスコットランド日本会館を設立することを願う別役厚子によって２００９年に設立されました。日本語の歌を一緒に歌い、国境を越えてつながることを目指しています。
History
In 2009/2010 22 fortnightly meetings were held at Tollcross Community Centre and the group performed on six occassions including at Spring Concert in May at Reid Concert Hall which was hosted jointly by our group and Edinburgh University Japanese Society. Ms Calyn Tsukishima, a Japanese soul singer, started supporting the group and sang with us at the above concert. We had 10 different nationalities of members.

2009・2010年には、22回の隔週の集まりがトルクロス・コミュニティ・センターでもたれました。エディンバラ大学ジャパニーズソサイティとの共催でリードコンサートホールでもたれた5月の春のコンサートをはじめとして、6回の歌いました。日本人のソウル歌手である月嶋カリンさんが、支援をしてくださり始め、上記コンサートで一緒に歌ってくださいました。10の異なった国籍のメンバーがいました。
In 2010/2011 31 weekly meetings were held at Alison House of the Univeristy of Edinubrgh. The group was run under Edinburgh Univeristy Japanese Society during the year. We performed on 13 occassions. After 11 March, all our performances were at fundraising events supporting victims of the earthquake and tsunami. The group organised the Cheer Up Japan Concert in May in cooperation with Mr Atsushi Muramatsu (known as Atzi) greatly supported by the Univeristy of Edinburgh. Half the fund raised was sent to Ishinomaki-city via Hand in Hand for Japan set up by Ms Tsukishima, whose family home in Ishinomaki was severely damaged by the tsunami. We had 22 members, from 8 different nationalities.
2010・2011年には、31回の週ごとの集まりをエディンバラ大学のアリソンハウスで持ちました。この年、合唱団は、エディンバラ大学ジャパニーズソサイティのもとで運営されていました。13回の歌う機会がありました。3月11日以降は、すべてのパフォーマンスは、地震と津波の犠牲になった方々を支援する募金集めの企画でのものとなりました。5月には村松敦さん（Atziとして知られる）との協力で、エディンバラ大学の多大な支援を受け、元気のでる音楽会を企画しました。集められた募金の半分は、津波により石巻のご自宅が深刻な被害を受けた月嶋さんが設立されたHand in Hand for Japanを通じて、石巻市へと送られました。8つの異なった国籍を持つ22名のメンバーがいました。
New direction
In 2011/2012 we hope the group to be registered as a student society of the University of Edinburgh, while memberships are still open to anybody. The group hopes to organise music events to further the understanding of Japanese culture.

2011・2012年には、メンバーは誰にも開かれていながらも、エディンバラ大学の学生団体として登録することを願っています。日本文化の理解を促進できるような音楽的な取り組みを企画したいと思っています。
What are the reasons to set up a Japanese singing group?
- To introduce Japanese songs to people in Scotland by inviting anybody who are interested in singing them to the Japanese singing group and via concerts by the group open to the public
- To share something together through singing Japanese songs beyond racial and age barriers
To understand others' cultures there are many ways. But one of the most effective ways to attain this would be experiencing the culture by yourselves. It is not easy to define what Japanese songs are and also what Japanese cultures are. Here those songs and cultures which were originated in Japan are considered as Japanese cultures. There are many types of Japanese songs. Songs to be sung would be decided depending on how many people are attending and also what sorts of opinions and experiences each person who joining the singing group has.
日本の歌を歌う合唱団を設立する理由は何ですか。
- 日本語で歌を歌うことに関心のある、すべての人を合唱団に招待し、また、公開の合唱団によるコンサートを通じて、スコットランドの人々に日本の歌を紹介すること。
- 民族的・年齢的壁を越えて、日本の歌を歌うことを通じて、一緒に何かを共有すること。
多文化を理解するのにはたくさんの方法があります。ですが、これを達成する、最も効果的な方法の一つは、みずから、その文化を経験してみることでしょう。日本の歌とは何なのか、日本文化とは何なのか、定義するのは簡単ではありません。ここでは、日本で生まれた歌や、文化を日本文化として考えています。日本の歌には、たくさんのタイプがあります。合唱団で歌われる歌は、どれだけの人が参加するのか、またおのおのの合唱団参加のかたが、どのようなご意見や経験を持っているのかによって決まってくるでしょう。
What sorts of experiences are needed?
No prior experience in singing groups is required. Anybody who would like to sing songs in Japanese is welcome! A romanised version of Japanese ryrics of songs to be sung will be prepared.

合唱団での経験は必要ありません。日本語で歌を歌ってみたい方、誰でも歓迎です！ローマ字表記した歌詞も、用意します。
