[Art exhibition]

‘I have not heard from you, are you all right?’

Site-specific installation, inspired by the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan at the Pittenween Art Festival by Keiko Mukaide

6th to 14th August, Venue No 18 Water Wynd

Scottish Fisheries Museum yard 18th to 21st August

She explained how the idea has been conceived, ‘It caused a big shake up for the Japanese like myself who have put down roots in foreign countries for many long years. Japan was always a stable country, culturally and economically.

But here we saw something like war zone images where the Tsunami struck. I couldn’t believe that they were from my country. I really was heart broken by the news, I felt restless and agitated. My daily life has not been affected but this disaster has stricken me as a being as well as my country.’

Following her first local cultural portraits installation ‘Still Thinking of You’ in the Pittenweem Art Festival last year, her new project is a further development of site-specific installation in the Water Wynd Yard, this time making connections between local coastal culture, highlighting the indigenous cultural connections between Scotland and Japan.

The Sanriku coast in the north east of Japan has a rich tradition of fishing, whaling and farming seaweeds. Selected images and stories from the coast towns are pinned up in a humble shelter in the Pittenweem Art Festival 6th to 14th August and the Scottish Fishery Museum in Anstruther 18th to 21st August, the visitors are not only reading the stories but also to experiencing the realities of people’s lives in the area. They will be asked for small donation for blank postcards, which will be sent to Japan with their message. These will be collected and will be exhibited in the area in Japan.

The donation and money will be sent to the Reconstruction Fund Sanriku Fishing Industry which runs by local Non Profitable Organisation.

Also other fund raising opportunity is collaboration with Scottish jeweller Dot Sim, A special one-off special necklace in silver, glass and 18ct gold has been created for fund raising. The piece will be auctioned to raise funds for victims of the recent disaster in Japan with viewing at 1 Mid Shore during the Pittenweem Art Festival. Contact; dotdotsim@gmail.com
