More than 150 people attended!   150人以上のかたの参加がありました！

I really thank all who supported Cheer Up Japan Festival on 27 August 2011. Unfortunately we did not have as many attendants as we first hoped. Despite our big efforts to distribute the festival flyers and posters, we needed to compete with events in various Edinburgh festivals held on the day. Neverthless more than 150 people joined our Japan festival and enjoyed talks as well as various performances and different types of stalls.

２０１１年８月２７日の「元気でいこう日本祭り」をご支援くださったすべてのみなさんに本当に感謝いたします。残念なことに最初に願っていたほどの参加者の方にきていただくことはできませんでした。祭りのちらしとポスター配布への多大な努力にもかかわらず、この日にもたれたさまざまなエディンバラの祭りの企画と競い合うことにならざるを得ませんでした。そうした状況にもかかわらず、１５０人以上の方が私たちの「日本祭り」に参加してくださり、トークをはじめとして、いろいろなパフォーマンスそして違った種類の出店を楽しんでくださいました。

Attractive stalls and Japanese culture     魅力の出店と日本文化 

In terms of stalls, food stalls in particular those for Japanese foods & sweet breads and vegetable curry from Mosque Kitchen seem to have been most popular. Stalls for various small goods looked very attractive and created a festive atmosphere. Japanese acupressure massage and Aikido/Judo display attracted the attendants!  

出店については、食べ物の出店が、特に日本食や日本の菓子パン、またモスクキッチンの野菜カレーがもっとも人気があったようでした。さまざまな小物の出店は、とても魅力的で、祭りの雰囲気を作り出してくれていました。指圧や、合気道・柔道の紹介は、参加者の関心をあつめていました。

Saitara-bushi and Soran-bushi  　斎太郎節とソーラン節

Edinburgh Georgian Singers 'Skotebi' sang a Japanese traditional song which was originated from areas where Ishinomaki is located. Four students from Hijiyama University, Hiroshima, danced a traditional fishermen's song. These were specially showing solidality to those related to fishing industry affected by the disaster including  Ishinomaki.   

エディンバラ・ジョージアン・シンガーズ「スコテビ」は石巻市がある地域で生まれた日本の伝統的な歌を歌われました。広島の比治山大学の４人の学生たちは伝統的な漁師歌で踊ってくださいました。これらは特に石巻市を含む、震災で影響をうけた漁業にかかわる人々への連帯を示したものでした。

International support from Edinburgh   エディンバラから国際的なサポート

Ceileidhcaleerei Sctos Music Group accompanied to the singing of the popular Japanese song 'Ue o Muite Aruko (Sukiyaki-song)'. Japanese Singing Group, Peruvian and Korean singers also introduced Japanese songs. These reflected international support from Edinburgh. 

ケリーカリーリ・スコッツ音楽グループは、人気のある日本の歌「上を向いて歩こう」（スキヤキソング）を伴奏してくださいました。日本語合唱団、ペルーと韓国のシンガーの方も日本の歌を紹介してくださいました。これらは、エディンバラからの国際的な支援を反映したものでした。

Sharing experiences   経験を共有する 

However, the event's highlight was special talks by Mrs Chiemi Allwright and Mr Gavin Allwright who experienced the earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster living in a town just 20 minutes drive away. I was introduced to them by Ms Calyn Tsukishima, Ishinomaki-born soul singer, who set up Hand in Hand for Japan to support the city, since Chiemi is her elder sister. The audience listened to them carefully to share their on-going difficulties. 

ですが、企画のハイライトは、地震と、福島原発から車で２０分のところでその災害を経験された、オールライト千栄美さんとオールライトギャビンさんによるスペシャルトークでした。お2人を紹介くださったのは、石巻市出身のソウル歌手で、石巻市を支援するというHand in Hand for Japanというプロジェクトを立ち上げられた月嶋カリンさんで、千栄美さんはカリンさんのお姉さまでいらっしゃいます。お二人の引き続く困難を共有しようと聴衆は、注意深く話しに耳を傾けていました。

Earthquake and Tsunami    地震と津波 

Chiemi and Gavin lived with their three children who were also at the event in a house built by themselves supported by more than 100 volunteers using recycled and ecological materials. They experienced the earthquake on 11 March and Gavin described that the aftershock came in every two seconds, and Chiemi lost contact with her parents in Ishinamaki just after having been informed that their house was flooded by water up to the first floor. The highest tsunami hit the area was much higher than the ceiling of the Assembly hall where we were listening to the talks.  

千栄美さんとギャビンさんは、企画にも参加していた３人のお子さんとともにリサイクルの環境保護の材料をつかって１００人以上ものボランティアの人々による支援を受けて作られた家に住んでおられました。３月１１日に地震を経験され、ギャビンさんによれば、二秒ごとに余震がやってきたとのことでした。千栄美さんは、石巻のご両親とそのご両親のお家が二階まで水浸しになったとの報告のあと、接触がたたれることになりました。その地域を襲った津波の高さは、私たちがお話を伺っていた集会ホールの天井よりももっと高いものでした。

Nuclear power plant explosion    原発の爆発

On the following day just after dinner, a neighbor came to inform them that the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant exploded. Gavin, remembering Chernobyl's explosion, immediately decided to leave the house without spending time to take their belongings with them. They evacuated to a relative's house. When they watched the TV there for the first time after the earthquake, Chiemi described that she could not stop shaking by the scenery of the tsunami.   

次の日、夕飯後、近所のかたが福島第一原発が爆発したことを伝えに来てくれました。チェルノブイリの爆発を覚えていたギャビンさんは、身の回りの物をまとめることもせず、すぐに家を離れることを決めました。ご家族は、親戚のお宅へと避難されました。そこで震災後はじめてテレビを見られ、千栄美さんは津波の光景に震えが止まらなかったとのことでした。

Guilty felt   罪の意識

The family has finally evacuated to England, Gavin's parents' house. Since then Chiemi has been living there with her kids while Gavin went back to Miyagi-prefecture for his university teaching contracts, volunteering three days a week in Ishinomaki for more than three months. Chiemi said that she felt guilty eating an ordinally food in England since there are many who cannot leave the areas despite the seriousness of the nuclear radiation level.

ご家族は最終的にはギャビンさんのご両親のお家のあるイングランドに避難されています。以来、千栄美さんはそこで子どもたちと生活され、ギャビンさんは大学での非常勤のお仕事のために宮城県に戻られ、3ヶ月以上もの間、一週間に三日間石巻市でボランティアをされておられました。放射能のレベルの深刻さにもかかわらず地元を離れることができない多くの方がいるがゆえに、千栄美さんは、イングランドで普通の食事をするのに罪の意識があるといっておられました。

Difficulties and International Support 　　横たわる困難と国際的支援

The section where Chiemi's parents lived has now been considered not suitable to inhabit since the ground has sunk by almost one meter (3 feet). Physically and mentally so many difficulties have been lying in front of people affected. Gavin remembered a bright face of a senior man in Ishinomaki after international volunteers cleared debris which deterred him from going his home.   

千栄美さんのご両親が住んでおられた地区は、ほぼ1メートルほど地盤が沈下し、現在、住むのには相応しくないと考えられています。物理的にも、精神的にもたくさんの困難が被災された方々の前に横たわっています。ギャビンさんはある老人のかたのお宅への道を塞いでいた瓦礫を国際ボランティアの方が取り除いたときに、その方が見せた明るい顔のことを覚えていると紹介されました。

Connecting two cities  二つの都市をつなぐ

We could consider support in various areas including cultural, finantila and mental support. The next step would possibly be to start a support programm to be able to connect the local community, schools and universities in two cities, in hoping *to twin two cities, Ishinomaki and Edinburgh.

文化的、財政的、精神的な支援を含む、さまざまな分野での支援を考えることができるでしょうか。次の一歩として、石巻とエディンバラの二つを*姉妹都市にすることを願いながら、二つの都市での地域・学校･大学をつなぐことができるような支援プログラムを始めることができればと思っています。

Donations to be sent to Ishinomaki　　募金は石巻市へ    

We have raised £1269.31 including £704.31 which was raised on the day of the event. After deducting necessary expenses, we will be sent to the remaining money to Ishinomaki-city via Hand in Hand for Japan, set up by Ms Calyn Tsukishima, supported by Nam the Man, twice European champion football freestyler.

イベントの当日に集められた７０４．３１ポンドを含んで、１２６９．３１ポンドが募金として集まりました。必要経費を除いた額が、月嶋カリンさんが、二度ヨーロッパチャンピオンになったフリースタイルサッカー選手であるNam the Manさんの支援を得て設立したプロジェクトHand in Hand for Japanを通じて、石巻市に送られる予定です。

The final total amount of £707.21, deducting necessary expenses, has now been sent to Hand in Hand for Japan.

必要経費を除いた最終合計額、７０７，２１ポンドがHand in Hand for Japanへと送付されています。

Speakers and performers

Chiemi Allwright：Born in Ishinomaki, Miyagi prefecture. Aroma therapist.
After living in Tokyo for 15 years, went back to Miyagi with her husband. They had been living in a house which they built using ecological and recycled materials in a town close to Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, just 20 minutes by a car until it first exploded.

Gavin Allwright: Lived in Miyagi prefecture from 2005.
Director to NPO Greeh Heart Project. Worked for 10 years in Tokyo in publication industry after being free journalist visiting around 40 countries.

Edinburgh Georgian Singers 'Skotebi': ('Skotebi' means Scotland in Georgian) 

Japanese Singing Group: This multinational group sings Japanese traditional songs as well as popular songs/J-pop. They sing a traditional song, 'Cherryblossom', the theme song from the film 'Spirited Away', 'Always with me', and an internationally well-known song from the 1960s 'Walk looking above (Sukiyaki-song)'.
