'Cheer up Japan Concert' was held at St Cecilia's Hall, Edinburgh University from 6:30pm on Friday 6 May 2011. Mr Ken Hu and I (Atsuko Betchaku) were the two presenters. Although Principal of the University of Edinburgh, Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea decided to come to say some words of support to the audience on behalf of the university at the beginning of the concert, unfortunately it needed to be cancelled due to an unexpectedly prolonged meeting.    

「元気のでる音楽会」は、２０１１年５月６日（金曜日）、エディンバラ大学のセントセシリアズ・ホールにて、６時半より開かれました。ケン・フーさんと私（別役厚子）が二人で司会をしました。エディンバラ大学学長で教授のティモシー・オシーア卿は音楽会のはじめに大学のために聴衆に対して支援の言葉を述べてくださることを決めてくださっていましたが、残念ながら、予期せず長引いた会議のためにキャンセルされざるを得ませんでした。

There were almost 200 attendants, some standing at some point in the concert hall on the first floor. Japanese music varied from traditional taiko and shamisen music to recent pop songs, and there were also Scottish, Irish, English, Italian and other countries' folk songs and pop songs, original songs by local singer-songwriters and local bands, and classical music.  

２００人近いかたのご参加があり、二階の音楽ホールは、ある時点では、立ち見もでるほどでした。日本の曲は、伝統的な太鼓、三味線音楽から、最近のポップソングまで、また、スコットランドやアイルランド、イングランド、フランス、イタリア等のフォークソングやポップソング、地元のシンガーソングライターやバンドのオリジナル曲、さらに、クラッシックと多様でした。

In terms of Auld Lang Syne, the audience sung together first the original English lyrics, and those in various languages of Japanese, Chinese, French, and Korean in turn. It was a great concert where each performance had a different attraction to induce our attention and also the heartful messages included in their music reached straight to the audience.   

Auld Lang Syneは、英語のオリジナルのほかに、日本語、中国語、フランス語、韓国語でも順に参加者もともに参加して歌いました。それぞれの演奏に、目をそらせない違った魅力があり、そして、曲にこめられた心からのメッセージがまっすぐに観客に伝わってくる素晴らしい音楽会でした。

There are a lot of positive comments: 'It was a great mix of various style in music, and constant surprise that's never boring', 'It was so enjoyable having had various types of music', 'The atmospher was so warm', 'I was moved and felt that music can do something great', 'All the acts cordinated very well', 'Singing Auld Lang Syne in different languages worked really well'. Taiko and Shamisen performances attracted many people and created a warm and special atomospher to feel Japan closely.   

たくさんのポジティブな感想をいただいています。「さまざまなスタイルの音楽の偉大なまじわり、そして決して飽きない絶え間ない驚き」「色んなタイプの音楽があって、すごく楽しめた」「とても温かい雰囲気だった」「音楽ってすごいと感動した」「すべての演奏がとてもうまく調和していた」「Auld Lang Syneを違った言語で歌ったのが、とてもよかった」太鼓と三味線の演奏には、多くの方が惹きつけられたようで、日本のことを身近に感じる、温かくて特別な雰囲気を作り出していました。

I sincerely thank all of the attendants, the performers, the volunteers for the stalls and the reception, Mr Atsushi Muramatsu, the members of the Japanese Singing Group, and finally all other supporters and sponsors for the concert. The design of the programme on the day was done by Ms Tacie Juan Yu Tien, a Taiwanese volunteer. Thank you very much!

We raised nearly £800. In terms of the final amount of donations I will announce soon.

Donations

This concert is held in support of people who have been affected by East Japan Great Earthquake on 11 March 2011. Donations collected and all profits on this day will be sent to Japan Red Cross via Japanese Consulate General in Edinburgh, and one of the severely affected areas, Ishinamoki-city via Hand in Hand for Japan.

Mimi (Aimee) Cao: postgraduate student in Education at the University of Edinburgh. Playing the piano since her childhood.

 Satomi Watanabe: exchange student from Japan at the University of Edinburgh. Representative of Edinburgh for Japan, students' body which collected more than £13,000 in their fundraising activities for Japan.

The Forest Trio: Strings trio. The group plays 'Hana', a song from Okinawa, specially arranged for this concert. Atzi, a Japanese cellist, sings this song, longing for freedom and happiness.

Sam Barber: Edinburgh singer-songwriter. For the third of his epic 3-part 'Valley of Silence' astronomy pop concept album, Sam is currently working with the Outcasts and this group makes regular appearances at many Edinburgh venues.

Norman Lamont: WaveForms is the name he gives to his instrumental music, inspired by the work of Robert Fripp and Brian Eno - wave because it uses a sustaining guitar, a guitar synth and looping techniques to set up gently rising and falling waves of sound.

Dave Wheatley: Known in  Edinburgh music scene  for his sincere song writing and haunting deep voice. Album released just last month.

Ceileidh Caleerie Band: The Scots Music Group’s ceilidh band. The group is part funded by the Scottish Arts Council and is affiliated to the Adult Learning Project (ALP), a City of Edinburgh Community Education organisation.

Calum Carlyle: Edinburgh based singer-songwriter with many strings to his bow and his own musical style.

Gudrun Sabrina, Ina Hanish, &Wise L Leathermonk: Multi-talent Gudrun with friends. She specially choses an English version of a Haiku poem by Issa Kibayashi for this concert and improvises this.

Tamsin Dearnley & Atzi: Post-graduate students of composition at the University of Edinburgh.

Townhouse: Local band taking shape in the last few years. The songs are written by Lisa & Stuart, inspired primarily by lyrics and emotion rather than led by a particular style of music.

Marumi Tasaki & Shun Kohama: Exchange students of the University of Edinburgh,  from Japan. Marumi plays the piano and the flute, while Shun the piano and the trombone.

Raymond Considine: Msc student in film studies, Edinburgh University. Winner of Mary V Hand Prize in music at Cork University, Ireland. Classically trained on piano, playing more blues and folk music around the world.

Hiromi Moffat: Professional shamisen player. Often accompanied by Nagauta singing, a type of Japan's traditional music. Performed in so many occassions around Scotland.

Ayako Suzuki: Exchange student in language, Edinburgh University. Specialised piano in her school years from primary school to high school.

Hiroshi Shibata: Postgraduate student in classics, Edinburgh University. Experienced Taiko dramming as part of local annual festival since his childhood.

Shaun McCormack: Graduate from Heriot-Watt University. Singing in the university choir and in a band. A member of the Japanese Singing Group.

Anna Kennedy & Leanne Bell: Primany 6 students at South Morningside primary school. Anna plays the piano and the violin. Leanne plays the violine and the guitar.
