Talk with Ms Calyn Tsukishima 月嶋カリンさんと話す

On 16 November I had a chance to catch up with Ms Calyn Tsukishima who encouraged the Japanese Singing Group. I thought I would share some thoughts and impressions left from the conversation.

11月16日に、合唱団のすすめかたについて月嶋カリンさんとお話をする機会がありました。今回は、そのときの話から印象に残ったことを皆さんにもお伝えできればと思います。

Last year September when I first started the Japanese Singing Group, Ms Tsukishima contacted me and since then has been supporting the group in various forms. This year May in collaboration with the Edinburgh University Japanese Society, the Japanese Singing Group organised a concert in which Ms Tsukishima performed as a guest.

月嶋カリンさんは、昨年の9月、合唱団をはじめたばかりの私にご連絡をくださり、それ以来、さまざまな形で日本語合唱団を応援してくださってきています。今年5月に日本語合唱団と、エディンバラ大学ジャパニーズソサイティが共同主催したコンサートには、ゲストとして参加くださいました。

Calyn, considering that two purposes of the Japanese Singing Group (promoting cultural exchanges via Japanese songs; creating a community which crosses cultural and age barries) are very important, proposed two points that we had better reaffirm each other. One that it is a good thing that we are all amateurs when it comes to singing. And so secondly therefore it is normal for us not to be able to sing well from the beginning. We can start from this level. 

カリンさんは、日本語合唱団の二つの目的（日本を歌を通じて文化交流をする・民族、年齢の壁を超えたコミュニティをつくる）をとても大事に考えてくださった上で、二つのことを、お互いに対してあらためて確認する必要があるのでは、とおっしゃっていました。ひとつは、 私たちは、歌に対しては、ど素人であり、またそれで良いということ。二つ目は、だから、最初から上手く歌えなくて当たり前であるということ。そこから出発しようということでした。

Considering the above, singing is a means through which participants would come to understand each other. And this would be the most important element of the Singing Group.

その意味で、歌は手段であって、それを通じての心のふれあいが、合唱団のもっとも大切な要素になるのではないか、とのことでした。

With this as its basis when considering to improve the skill level required for the songs, Calyn emphasized the following points. Choir singing needs a spirit of assisting and supporting each other. In order to be able to sing comfortably each other, we have to listen to the same sound as people singing the same part whilst listening to the different sounds other parts of the choir make. Basically we all sing in unison despite different sounds from different sections, but where there is not enough in one section there is a necessity to support it.

その上で、歌のレベルをあげることを考えるとき、大事なこととしてカリンさんが強調されたことは、以下のようなことでした。合唱するということには、助け合い、支えあいの精神がいる。同じパートの人と同じ音を一緒に、また、他のパートの人が違う音を、ともに気持ちよく歌えるようにするためには、同じパートの人、つまりその人の出す音を、そして、他のパートを歌う人また音を良く知らないといけない。そして、足りないところを補いあう必要がある。

There has to be love and consideration for each other. Narcissism is no good. Love is to associate with your partners. By singing in one voice there should be a synergistic effect. "With only one note no harmony would be created." said Calyn. Since choir singing cannot be made by one person, we must be considerate of each other and  support your partners in sound.

そこには、互いへの思いやり、愛がなければいけない。自己愛では駄目である。愛は、合（あい）であって相（あい）である。相手と合わせることで、そこに相乗効果が生まれることが必要であるとのことでした。「単音では、ハモリは成り立たないんです。」とカリンさんはおっしゃっていました。合唱は一人でするものではないので、音として、相手を思いやり、支えあわないといけないともおっしゃっていました。  

To be more concrete, before singing, one should listen to the whole song (if possible the harmony), and not just your own part but listen to the other parts people will sing is very important. Through this it is possible to understand how the song is made and understand the differences in parts. Then if possible aim towards being able to sing all the different parts.

具体的には、歌う前に、まず、歌（音）全体を聞くこと（できればハーモニーで歌われたもの）、また、自分のパートだけでなく、他のパートの人の歌（音）も聞くことが大事だとのことでした。これを通じて、こうハーモニーをつくるんだということ、またパートの違いもわかるということでした。できれば、全部のパートが歌えるとよいとのことでした。 

To sing better it is necessary to train itself, but it is also important to be able to understand how good the feeling is when singing the harmony. She also menitoned that it is important for people to harmonise their breath as starting to sing exactly at the same time, probably relating to mentioned before about consideration.

歌のレベルの向上には、訓練が必要だけれども、ハーモニーで歌ったときの気持ちよさを知ることはとても大切だとのことでした。それと、先に述べられたことと関係があると思うのですが、出だしがぴたっと合うことを含め、みなの呼吸が合うことの大切さを述べておられました。

As Calyn was giving advice I was trying to answer myself as to why I started the singing group. Through songs I wished participants to understand Japan's society and to touch people's feelings projected in them. Also through this I hoped to create a community which can make people meet and connect regardless of race or age.

カリンさんのこうしたアドバイスを伺いながら、私自身あらためて、私はなぜ合唱団をつくったのだろう、と自問自答しました。歌を通して、そこに映し出される日本の社会、そして、そこに反映された人々の心にふれてほしい、それがひとつの願いでした。また、歌を歌うことを通じて、民族的、あるいは年齢的な壁をこえて、ふれあい、つながりあうことのできる、そうしたコミュニティをつくりたいと願っていました。

I am very impressed by a student who originally just came to observe the Singing Group, but has decided continuously to come to the group because everybody is very warm. I really do think people's emotions can be really honestly reflected in their voice and in their singing. You cannot pretend. Therefore I sincerely hope to sing as echoeing each others hearts.

ある学生のかたが、単に見学しようと思ってきたのだけれど、皆がとてもあたたかいので続けて来ているといってくださったことが私にはとても印象的でした。人間の感情は本当に正直に、声に、歌に反映されるものだと思います。ごまかしがきかない。だからこそ、互いの心を響き合わせられるように歌いたいなあと切に願うのです。
