Film night's interesting discussion 映画の夜の興味深い討論

Yesterday's film night for 'Sprited Away' jointly hosted by the Welcoming International Cinema Club and the Film Group had a good turn-out. It was held at the Tollcross Community Centre from 6.30pm. As far as I noticed there were 30 people watched the film. Half of them stayed for the discussion after the film. It was interesting and enjoyable!

昨日のウェルカミング国際映画クラブと映画の会によって共催された「千と千尋の神隠し」の映画の夜は、とても盛況でした。会は、トルクロス・コミュニティ・センターで午後６時半からもたれました。私が気がついた限りでは３０人の方が映画を見てくださいました。半数のかたが、映画のあとの討論に参加してくださり、討論は興味深く、楽しいものでした！

At first I introduced the film to the attendants. I explained that this film became the highest -grossing film in Japanese history when it was released in 2001 and it was still true in 2009. This film also won some prestigious international film awareds. In particular I mentioned that it won the Golden Bear, the highest award, at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival with another film. This was the first time for an animation to have won this award.

最初に私が参加者のかたに映画の紹介をしました。この映画は２００１年に公開された際に日本史上で最高の興行収益を記録した映画になり、２００９年にもまだそうであったことを説明しました。この映画はまた、いくつかの名声のある国際映画賞を受賞しました。特に、２００２年のベルリン国際映画祭でもう一つの映画とともに金熊賞という最高の賞を受けたことを説明しました。これはアニメがこの賞を得た初めてのことでした。

I further suggested that the success of this film in Japan at that time would have refrected what Japanese people culturally needed after the babble economy which ended in the early 1990s.

私はさらに日本でのそのときのこの映画の成功は、１９９０年代初期に終わったバブル経済のあとに日本の人々が文化的に何を必要としていたかを反映していただろうということを提示していました。

At the discussion which continued even at the Filmhouse cafe with 6 attendants including me, many interesting comments were presented. First we discussed what being Sen and being Chihiro respectively represent in the film. In the film Sen was the name of the main character in the wonderland and Chihiro was her real name.

討論では、それは私を含む６人の参加者でフィルムハウスのカフェでも続けられたのですが、たくさんの興味深いコメントが出されていました。まず、私たちは、この映画で、千（せん）であることと、千尋（ちひろ）であることは、それぞれ何を代表しているのかを討論しました。映画では、千は、不思議の国での主人公の名前であり、千尋は、彼女の本当の名前でした。

One stated that being Sen means a slave in the bath house (in the wornderland) where working is the most important, while being Chihiro relates to something spending time  with the family. In terms of being Chihiro, another said that it means she regained  her soul. I myself stated that the most important element related to what she doesn't forget her real name is that she realises her own power she has got.

ある人は、千であることは、働くことがもっとも大事である（不思議の国での）浴場の奴隷を意味しており、それに対して、千尋であることは、家族と時間を過ごすということに関係していると述べていました。千尋であることについては、別の人は、彼女が彼女の魂を再び獲得することを意味していると言っていました。私自身は、この点について、彼女が自分の持っている力に気がつくことが、彼女が本当の名前を忘れないでいることと関係したもっとも大事なことではないかと述べました。

Originally Sen's only wish was to save her parents. But she wished to help the Stinky God (the River God) and the No Face. In fact, her strongest wish she showed was to save Haku, the spirit of Kohaku river, who helped her to remember her real name and to save her parents. Sen was able to help them because she was interested in removing something which stopped them from being themselves. Some said that she was different from others in the bath house in the sense that she could reject getting gold.

もともとは千の唯一の願いは、彼女の両親を救うことでした。ですが、お腐れ様（川の神）やカオナシを助けることを願いました。実際のところ、彼女が示した最も強い願いは、彼女が本当の名前を思い出すよう助け、彼女の両親を救うことを助けた、琥珀川の精神である、ハクを救うことでした。千が彼らを助けることができた理由は、彼らが、彼ら自身であることを妨げていた何かを取り除くことに彼女が関心を持ったからでした。何人の方が述べていたのですが、彼女は金を手に入れることを拒否できたという点で、浴場では他とは違った存在でした。

As one attendant pointed out, in this film water played an important role. However, relating contaminated or destroyed rivers, in fact without Sen's help both the river God and the sripit of the Kohaku river could not regain themselves. If so, Sen might represent human beings in connection with the nature. Only human beings can support the nature to recover their own power, and by recovering it human beings or Sen can become themselve, or her real self, Chihiro.     

ある参加者の方が指摘されたように、この映画の中で、水は大事な役割を果たしていました。ですが、汚された、

あるいは、破壊された川に関しては、実際のところ、千の助けなしには、川の神も琥珀川の精神も自らを再獲得することはできなかったのでした。そうだとすれば、千は自然との関係では人間を代表しているのかもしれません。人間のみが自然が自らの力を再生するよう助けることができ、また、自然を再生させることによって、人間は、人間に、あるいは千は、彼女の真の自己である千尋になることができるのです。

Thus Chihiro and Haku needed each other's support for each of them to become self. Kamaji  called this relationship love. The director Miyazaki stated that this film is not Chihiro's growing-up story. Considering this its main theme would be about a culture stimulating to regain your own self or your own beings by supporting each other to attain this. 

こうして千尋とハクは、それぞれが自らであるために互いの助けを必要としていました。釜爺はこの関係を愛と呼んでいました。宮崎監督は、この映画は、千尋の成長物語ではないと述べていました。このことを考えるとすれば、映画の主要テーマは、互いを支えあうことによって、己をあるいは、自己存在を再獲得することを促す文化についてであるのでしょうか。
