Spring Concert: apology 春のコンサート：お詫び

The Spring Concert held on 28 May, Friday, was a great success. There were around 100 people joined our concert. I thank everybody who supported us, in particular the university of Edinburgh, our sponsors (AIHUA, Bonsai, Miso & Sushi, and Skett), and the joint host Edinburgh University Japanese Society. But there is one thing I have to apologise.

５月２８日（金曜日）に開かれた春のコンサートは、大成功でした。私たちのコンサートには約１００名の方が参加してくださいました。私たちをご支援くださった全てのかた、特に、エディンバラ大学、私たちのスポンサーの方々（ＡＩＨＵＡ，Ｂｏｎｓａｉ，Ｍｉｓｏ＆Ｓｕｓｈｉ，そして、すけっと）、また、共催団体であるエディンバラ大学ジャパニーズソサイティに感謝いたしたく思います。ですが、一点、お詫びを申し上げないといけないことがあります。

After the concert, I got many positive comments about it in particular the singing by both Ms Calyn Tsukishima and the Japanese Singing Group. However, there were also some comments which suggested there are some elements to be improved.  

コンサートの後、特に月嶋カリンさんと日本語合唱団による歌に対して、たくさんの積極的なコメントをいただきました。ですが、いくつかの改善すべき要素があることを示唆するコメントもありました。

These criticisms were for my introduction to each song and also for my concluding comments at the end of the concert. For the former, it was pointed out too long. I remember that my introduction to each song became gradually longer towards the end  of the concert since I worried that the whole programme might finish so early. 

これらのご批判は、おのおのの歌への私の紹介に対してであり、またコンサートの最後でのまとめのコメントに対してのものでした。前者については、あまりに長かったとのご指摘でした。思い出されるのは、おのおのの歌への紹介が、コンサートの終わりのほうでは、全体プログラムがかなり早くに終わってしまうかもしれないと心配したがゆえに徐々に長くなってしまったということでした。

In terms of my concluding comments, in particular I would like to apologise sincerely one thing to both the members of the Japanese Singing Group and the audience at the concert. At that time I mentioned a certain background why I hope to set up the Japanese Institute of Scotland. However, it was my fault mentioning this without showing the fact that it was my own opinion and has not necessarily been shared by the members of the Japanese Singing Group.

私のまとめのコメントについては、特にある一点について、日本語合唱団のメンバー、コンサートの聴衆の方ともに対して、心よりお詫びを申し上げたいと思います。私は、その場で、なぜスコットランド日本会館を設立することを望んでいるかの一定の背景にふれました。ですが、それは、私の意見であり、必ずしも日本語合唱団のメンバーによって共有されている意見ではないという事実を示すことなくこのことに言及したのは、私の間違いでした。

Although the Japanese Singing Group was set up by me, it aims to be open to anybody who wants to sing in Japanese. Therefore it is entirely free whether each member shares my opinions in terms of the aim of the setting up the Japanese Institute of Scotland. I should have made clear about this point at the concluding comments at the concert. 

 日本語合唱団は、私によって設立されたのではありますが、日本語で歌いたい誰にでも開かれていることを目標としています。それゆえ、おのおののメンバーがスコットランド日本会館を設立する目的について、私の意見を共有するのか否かについてはまったく自由です。コンサートでのまとめのコメントではこの点について明らかにすべきでした。

I really apologise again the way I explained would have caused some uncomfortableness to some members of the Japanese Singing Group. I also apologize to the audience, who might have thought that all the members shared the same opinions with me, by misleading them.

再び私の説明の仕方について、それが日本語合唱団の幾人かのメンバーに心地悪さをもたらしたであろうこと、本当にお詫びを申し上げます。また、全てのメンバーが私と同じ意見を持っていると思われたかもしれない聴衆のかたにも、誤解に導いたことについてお詫びを申し上げます。

I understand that there are also various opinions about my own opinions and whether they should have been mentioned in public. For these I would like to consider carefully through further conversations with others. Thank you very much indeed for pointing out important topics to consider. I appreciate all the people who gave me opinions straight. I sincerely thank them. (Atsuko Betchaku)

私自身の意見について、また、その意見を公で言及することについて様々な御意見があることも理解しています。これらについては、さらなるみなさんとの会話を通じて、注意深く考えてみたいと思っています。大事な検討すべき課題をいただき本当にありがとうございました。ご意見を率直に寄せていただいた全ての方に感謝いたしたいと思います。心よりお礼を申し上げます。(別役厚子）
