Discussed 'Ponyo' 「崖の上のポニョ」について議論しました

On 4 April, a meeting of the Film Group was held at the Filmhouse after watching the film 'Ponyo'.

４月４日、映画の会の集まりが、映画「崖の上のポニョ」を見た後、フィルムハウスで持たれました。

Three new members, two British and one Malay, attended the meeting. All the attendants apart from me found that this film was not as good as other Mr Miyazaki's films such as 'Spirited Away' 'My Neighbour Totoro' and 'Haul's Moving Castle'. One stated that it was difficult to get what the message was. Another said that he could neither identify himself with Ponyo, one of the main characters, nor with Sosuke, the other.

２人のイギリス人、一人のマレーシア人の方の、３人の新しいメンバーが集まりに参加してくださいました。私を除くすべての参加者が、この映画が、「千と千尋の神隠し」「となりのトトロ」や「ハウルの動く城」のような他の宮崎さんの映画ほどには、良かったとは感じられていませんでした。お一人の方は、何がメッセージなのかがわかりにくかったと述べておられました。別の方は、主人公の一人である、ポニョとも、また、もう一人の主人公、宗助とも自分を同一視することができなかったと述べておられました。 

An attendant mentioned that the English dubbed version might have changed some important elements of the original Japanese version since we watched the English version. In fact, I noticed one essential change regarding how Sosuke calls his mother and father. While in the Japanese original he calls them in their first names, in the English version he calls them 'mom' and 'dad'.  

私たちは英語版をみたのですが、ある参加者の方は、英語吹き替え版は、何か日本語の元版の大事な要素を変更していたのかもしれないといっておられました。実際、私は、宗助がどう彼の母と父を呼ぶのかにかかわって、ある基本的な変更がなされていることに気がつきました。日本語原版では、彼は、両親を彼らの名前で呼ぶのですが、英語版では、「マム（お母ちゃん）」「ダッド（お父ちゃん）」と呼んでいるのです。

In Japan, it is so rare that any child calls his/her mother and father in their first names without any honorific. But in the original Japanese version of this film Sosuke calls his mother as 'Risa' and his father 'Koichi'. Sosuke is still five years old. Somebody asked me when children called their mothers and fathers in their first names at home if this means their distant relationships. I stated that this seems to show Sosuke's family's unusualness in Japan and their friendslike relationships.

日本では、子どもが彼の、あるいは彼女の母親と父親の名前を呼び捨てするのは大変稀です。ですが、この映画の元の日本語版では、宗助は彼の母親を「りさ」と呼び、彼の父親を「こういち」と呼んでいました。宗助はまだ５歳です。ある参加者の方が私に、子どもが母親と父親を家で名前で呼ぶのは、距離のある関係を意味するのかと問われました。私は、これは、宗助の家族の日本でのめずらしさと彼らの友達のような関係性を示しているように思えると述べました。

As I wrote on 27 March, the director Miyazaki created this film as his important message to the world. He not only directed this film but also wrote its original and script. He also attempted to go back to the origin of the animation writing all the pictures by hands. I watched this film's original Japanese version three times and watched the English version at the Filmhouse, trying to work out its message.

３月２７日に記したように、 宮崎監督は、この映画を彼の世界への大事なメッセージとして作っていました。彼は、この映画を監督しただけでなく、原作、そして、脚本を書いていました。すべて手書きで絵を描き、アニメーションの原点に戻ろうとも試みていました。私は、この映画のメッセージをつかもうと、日本語の元版を三回、そしてフィルムハウスで英語版を見ました。

In my opinion, Ponyo represents something energetic to change things not with hatred but honesty with oneself. Being saved, protected, and given the name Ponyo by Sosuke, she, a goldfish, strongly hoped to meet him and also hoped to be human beings like Sosuke. This exubelant wish indirectly came to destroy her father's plan to extinguish human beings based on his hatred towards them.  

私にはポニョは、憎しみとともにではなく、自らへの正直さでもって物事を変えようとする、力強い何かを代表しています。宗助によって助けられ、守られ、ポニョという名を与えられた、金魚である彼女は、強く、彼に再び会いたい、宗助のような人間になりたいと望みました。このあふれるような願いは、間接的に、彼女の父の、憎しみに基づいた人類を葬り去ろうとする計画を破壊することになりました。 

While this brought the earth itself including the sea and human beings into a crisis, it was dissolved only by Sosuke's acceptance of Ponyo not only being a human being but also being a goldfish and half-fish human. I consider Sosuke represents human beings and was tested whether he can accept the sea as a beloved friend and if he can accept Ponyo as she is and was.

このことは、海と人間を含む地球そのものを危機に陥れた一方、この危機は、宗助が、人間だけでなく、金魚そして半漁人でもあるポニョを受けいれることによってのみ、解決されました。私は、宗助は、人類を代表しているものと考えます。そして、その彼は、愛する友として、海を受け入れることができるのか、またポニョを、彼女の今をそして過去をあるがままに受け止めることができるのかをテストされたのでした。

The director Miyazaki stated that the world issue is in multi-race when he talked about the film. I guess that Ponyo would also represent any other races except Japanese for Sosuke, Japanese. 

宮崎監督は、映画について語った際、世界の問題は多民族にあると述べていました。ポニョは、日本人である宗助にとっては、日本人以外のどの他の民族をも代表しているのだと思います。
