The film "Fourteen" 映画「１４歳」

Today a meeting of the Film Group was held after watching the film 'Fourteen' at the Filmhouse.

本日、フィルムハウスで、映画「１４歳」を見たあと、映画の会の集まりがもたれました。

Unfortunately not many audiences were for this film. There were around 15 in total. The Film Group's meeting was thus also small. Through opinions presented at the meeting and a friend's reactions, I found that many felt bored with this film and difficult to get any positive messages from it.

残念ながら、この映画には、あまり多くの観客がいませんでした。全体で、約１５人ほどでした。映画の会の集まりもそれゆえ小さいものでした。集まりで出された意見、また友人の反応を通じて、多くの人がこの映画を退屈で、そこから何か積極的なメッセージを受けとることは困難な映画だと感じていたことがわかりました。

For me, this film was interesting. I never felt too long nor bored. The director Hiromasa Hirosue also played one of the main characters, Sugino, who is 26 years old. Since Mr Hirosue was born in 1978, when this film was made in 2006, he was still 28.

私には、この映画は興味深いものでした。決して長すぎるとも、退屈だとも感じませんでした。広末哲万監督は、２６歳の主人公の一人である杉野を演じてもいました。広末さんは１９７８年生まれがゆえに、この映画が２００６年に作られたときには、まだ２８歳でした。

It is said that both the director and the screenwriter (Mr Izumi Takahashi) created this film based on their memories from their own school days. There was an incident in 1997 where the age of fourteen years was considered seriously. In Kobe, Japan, a series of incidents killings and injuring school pupils occured and a fourteen years old student was arrested as the perpetrator. As the title of the film shows, it seems to have been inspired by this incident.

監督も、脚本家（高橋泉さん）もともに、彼ら自身の学校時代の記憶に基づいてこの映画をつくったということでした。１９９７年には、１４歳という年齢が真剣に考えられた事件がありました。神戸で連続児童殺傷事件が起り、１４歳の生徒が犯人として逮捕されたのでした。この映画は、タイトルが示しているように、この事件がヒントになっているように思われます。   

This film depicts the transformation of both a teacher and her friend who faced up with  14 years old children. They both forgot the time when they were 14. But gradually the memories came back to them. They contemplated seriously why they were frustrated while 14 and this made them decide not repeating what adults did to them at that time.

映画は、１４歳の子どもたちと向き合うことになったある教師と、その友人の変遷を描いています。彼らはともに、彼らが１４歳だったときのことを忘れていました。ですが、徐々に記憶が戻って来ます。そして彼らは真剣に、なぜ彼らはが１４歳のときいらいらしていたのかを熟考します。そのことによって彼らは、そのときに彼らに対して大人がしたことを繰り返さないという決意をします。
