We will sing "Give me wings"! 「翼をください」を歌います！

In the next meeting of the Japanese Singing Group on 25 March, we will sing a song called 'Tsubasa wo kudasai' (Give me wings).

３月２５日の日本語合唱団の次の集まりでは、「翼をください」という歌を歌います。

This song was origianlly released in 1971 by a group 'Akai Tori' (meanig red birds) as the back side of a record for 'Takeda no Komoriuta' (Lullaby of Takeda). More than 1 million records were sold at that time.

この歌は、もともと１９７１年に、「竹田の子守唄」というレコードの裏面として「赤い鳥」というグループによって売り出されました。このときには、１００万枚を超えるレコードが売れました。  

Since the mid-1970s, this song has been introduced into school music textbooks and  thus is well known. Many singers including Ms Kaori Kawamura and Mr Hideaki Tokunaga conver this song. It seems to be that from 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament,  this song has been aopted as supporters' song of the  Japan's national football team. 

１９７０年代半ば以降、この歌は、学校の音楽教科書に紹介され、よく知られるようになっています。川村かおりさんや徳永英明さんを含む多くの歌手の方がこの歌をカバーしています。１９９８年ＦＩＦＡワールドカップの予選からは、この歌は、日本代表サッカーチームへの応援歌として採用されているようです。

Further this song was used in an animation series on TV, 'Kei-on' and in an animation film, 'Evangelion: 2.0 you can (not) advance' both in 2009. Also in 2009 Ms Susan Boyle, a British singer, covered an English version of this song and in 2010 a group called Beckii Cruel and Cruel Angels in which Ms Beckii Cruel from Isle of Man is the core member, covered this song in Japanese.  

さらにこの歌は、２００９年には、テレビのアニメシリーズ「軽音」で、また、アニメ映画「エヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版：破」でも使われました。また、同じく２００９年には、イギリス人歌手である、スーザン・ボイルさんが、この歌の英語版をカバーし、２０１０年に入り、マン島出身のベッキー・クルーエルさんを中心とするベッキー・クルーエルとクルーエル・エンジェルスというグループが日本語でこの歌をカバーしています。
