Film night of 'Tony Takitani' 「トニー滝谷」の映画の夜

On Thursday, 4 March, a joint meeting of the Film Group and the Welcoming International Cinema Club was held at the Tollcross Community Centre from 6.30pm.

３月４日、木曜日に、映画の会とウェルカミング国際映画クラブの共同の会がトルクロス・コミュニティ・センターで午後６時半より持たれました。

There were around 23 people attended. They consisted of varieties of nationalities, including Japanese. Volunteers of the Welcoming International Cinema Club prepared tea, a projector, a screen and so on.

およそ２３人の方が参加してくださいました。日本人を含む、さまざまな国の方がおられました。ウェルカミング国際映画クラブのボランティアの方々が、お茶、プロジェクター、スクリーン等を準備してくださいました。

First I introduced the film briefly and explained why I chose it. I stated that this film seems to show an important aspect of Japanese society. After watching the film for one and half an hour, we made a circle moving chairs.

まず、私が映画を簡単に紹介し、なぜ、この映画を選んだのかを説明しました。私は、この映画は、日本社会の大事な一側面を映し出しているように思えると述べました。１時間１５分の映画をみたあと、イスを動かして、輪を作りました。

First we introduced each other briefly and a lively discussion followed. Many interesting views were presented. Points discussed included the following:

• Whether this film shows some hope for Tony Takitani's future
• Why his first and family names are intentionally put in the reverse order of the normal Japanese order where the first name comes after the family name
• Why the name of 'Tony' had such a serious meaning in Japaenese society

最初に私たちは、互いについて簡単に紹介しあい、そして、活発な議論が続きました。多くの興味深い見解が出されました。議論されたポイントには、以下のようなものが含まれていました。

• この映画は、トニー滝谷の将来に何らかの希望を示しているのかどうか。
• 彼の名前と姓が意図的に姓のあとに名前が来るという、普通の日本での順と逆に用いられているのは、なぜなのか。
• なぜ、「トニー」という名前が、日本社会のなかで、そんなに深刻な意味を持つのか。
