Song for next Singing Group 次回の合唱団の歌

The next meeting of the Japanese Singing Group will be held on 28 January, Thursday, from 7pm at the Tollcross Community Centre. A new song to be sung is 'Best Friend' by Kiroro.

日本語合唱団の次の集まりは、１月２８日（木曜日）の午後７時より、トルクロス・コミュ二ティ・センターにてもたれる予定です。 新しく歌うのは、Kiroroによる「Best Friend」です。

This song came to be a great hit in 2001 as the theme song for a popular morning drama series entitled 'Chura-san' aired on NHK, which is equivalent to BBC in Britain. The song is written and composed by one of the two Kiroro's members, Ms Chiharu Tamashiro.

この歌は、２００１年にイギリスのBBCにあたるNHKで放送された、「ちゅらさん」という人気のある朝の連続ドラマシリーズのための主題歌として大きなヒット曲になりました。歌は、二人のKiroroのメンバーの一人である、玉城千春さんによって、作詞、作曲されています。

The two Kiroro members, Ms Chiharu Tamashiro and Ms Ayano Kinjo, were both from Okinawa prefecture. Actually the above drama 'Chura-san' was the first series which set in Okinawa among many NHK's morning drama series. This series depicted the life of the main character after 1972 when Okinawa returned to Japan from the US.

二人のKiroroのメンバー、玉城千春さんと金城綾乃さんは、ともに、沖縄県の出身です。実際、上記のドラマ、「ちゅらさん」は、多くのNHKの朝のドラマシリーズの中では、沖縄を舞台にした、初めてのシリーズでした。このシリーズは、沖縄がアメリカから日本へと復帰した１９７２年以降の主人公の人生を描いていました。

For example, in early 2001 in Okinawa, two serious incidents occured: incident of obscenity to a female high school student and a series of arson. Both of them were commited by members of the US navy staying in Okinawa. Okinawa prefectural assemby protested against these and requested the reduction of the number of US soldiers staying in Okinawa. In Okinawa, 75% of the US army's bases in Japan in terms of area are located. 

例えば、２００１年初頭、沖縄では、二つの深刻な事件が起きました。一つは、女子高校生へのわいせつ事件、そして、連続放火事件でした。この両者ともに、沖縄に滞在するアメリカ海兵隊員の犯行でした。沖縄県議会は、これらに抗議をし、沖縄に滞在しているアメリカ兵士数の削減を要求しました。沖縄には、面積の点では、日本にあるアメリカ軍基地の７５％が位置しています。 

Unfortunately I have not watched this series. But I feel that this series could have aimed to make people in Okinawa and others in Japan feel closer each other. You can listen to the song 'Best Friend' in the following youtube:
