Popularity of 'Departures' 「おくりびと」の人気

The second meeting of the Film Group was held yesterday at the Filmhouse after watching the film 'Departures'.

映画の会の二回目の集まりが昨日、映画「おくりびと」を見た後、フィルムハウスで持たれました。

The cinema 3 of the Filmhouse where the film has been shown was totally full for the screening at 5.30pm. While watching the film I felt that it really absorbed the audience.  In total 6 people joined the meeting, all apart from me were new to the group: two Scottish, two Japanese and a French.   

映画が上映されているフィルムハウスのシネマ３は、５時半の上映では完全に満杯でした。映画を見ている間は、観客が本当に映画に熱中しているのが感じられました。集まりには、合計６人が参加し、私をのぞいた2人のスコットランド人、２人の日本人、１人のフランス人の方がたは、皆この会には初めての方たちでした。

Interestingly, two Scottish persons, who are a couple, mentioned that this film reminded them of a Scottish play 'Willie Rough' which was shown around 30 years ago. They said that this play was moving and displayed death and the working class men's emotions. Also interestingly, two of the attendants used to work in hospitals. They compared the hospital's systematic and dry treatment of the dead with the casketter's way shown in the film.

興味深いことに、カップルである、２人のスコットランド人の方は、この映画をみて、３０年ほど前に上演された「ウィリー・ラフ」という演劇を思い起こしたと言っておられました。この劇は、感動的で、死と労働者階級の男性たちの感情を表現したものだったとのことでした。また、興味深いことに、参加者の中のお２人は、病院でかつて働いたことがあった方でした。お２人ともに病院の組織化されて、そっけのない死者への取り扱いとこの映画で示された納棺師の対応とを比べておられました。

Various aspects of the film was commented:

• In Scotland the funeral undertaker has been still considered as an inferior job.
• In busy situation no rituals of time consuming would tend to be held. Because the film set in a country side therefore the job would be possible.
• This film showed how sincerely you can work.
• It was surprising to see men in any casketting ceremony cried.
• It started comically but gradually became serious. 
• This film tries to show what people forget in modern and urban lives. On the other hand it also depicts that even jobs which are considered dirty dealing with the dead have their own beauty. These elements probably would catch people's feelings  especially when current economic climate has increased the gap betweent the rich and the poor.    

映画のさまざまな側面にコメントがなされました。

•  スコットランドでは、葬儀屋は、まだ劣った仕事だと考えられている。
• 忙しい中では、時間のかかる儀礼は、もたれない傾向にある。映画は、田舎に設定されているがゆえに、この仕事が可能なのだろう。
• この映画は、どれだけ、真摯に働くことができるのかを示していた。
• どの納棺儀式でも男性が泣いていたのが驚きだった。
• コミカルに始まったけれども、だんだん深刻になっていった。
• この映画は、現代的都市生活の中で人々が忘れ去ったものを示そうと試みていた。他方で、死者に携わり汚いとみなされている仕事でさえ、それ自身の仕事の美しさがあることを示している。こうした要素がとりわけ、現在の経済状況が冨のあるものと貧しいものの間のギャップを増大させているとき、人々の感覚を捕らえているのではないか。 

In terms of the film's theme or the chief message interesting views were also presented.

• Showing respect for skills: so many approvals were given to the casketting job
• Human aspects
• Transformation
• Reconciliation
• Everybody has backgrounds. Sub-plots of many characters showed that
• Small rural town's culture
• On shame: Same issues still exist here in Scotland.

映画のテーマ、主なメッセージについても、興味深い意見が、出されました。

• 技術への尊敬を示すこと：たくさんの支持が納棺師の仕事に与えられた。
• 人間的な諸側面
• 変容
• 和解
• 誰もが背景を持っている：多くの登場人物についてのわき筋がそれを示している。
• 小さな田舎の町の文化
• 恥辱について：同じ問題は、スコットランドにもまだある。

On why the main character accepted being a casketter

• Because he was an artist. He saw the job as an art.
• He needed money.
• Exposure lead him to his revolution.
• Because of his personality
• Because of his background being abandoned, he was able to empasise with people who lost somebody close to them.
• He found the real meaning of playing the cello after recognising the beauty of the job. 

なぜ主人公は、納棺師であることを受け容れたのか。

• 彼は芸術家だったがゆえに、納棺師の仕事も芸術とみたから。
• 金が必要だったから。
• 曝されたことが彼の大変革を促した。
• 彼の人間性がゆえ。
• 捨てられたという彼の背景がゆえに、彼は、誰か身近な人を失った人々に共感することができたから。
• この仕事の美しさを認識して以降、チェロを弾く本当の意味を見出した。
