Film "Lost in Translation" 映画「ロスト・イン・トランスレーション」

This film won three BAFTA awards in 2003 and earned an Oscar in 2004.

この映画は、2003年には、三つの英国アカデミー賞を獲得し、2004年にはオスカーも一つ得ています。

Following yesterday, I watched this film today on a DVD. The director was Ms Sofia Coppola. It is about an encounter of an American movie star with a young American married woman in Tokyo. Both of them probably stayed in Japan for the first time.  

昨日に引き続き、今日は、この映画をDVDで見ました。監督は、ソフィア・コッポラさんです。映画は、東京におそらく初めて滞在した、アメリカ人の映画スターと若い、既婚のアメリカ人の女性との出会いについてです。

In fact, watching the way Tokyo has been depicted in this film I felt very much bemused. Gaining several film awards this film would be very influential all over the world. In this film many 'strange' surface features of modern Tokyo have been captured as witnessed by these two. Japanese people they encountered have hardly had any meanings to them as if they are the wall. Japan is depicted as representing something that in fact they cannot understand being lost in translation as the title means.

実は、この映画での東京の描かれ方を見ながら、私は、とても当惑させられました。いくつかの映画の賞を獲得したこともあり、この映画は、世界中で、大いなる影響力を持つでしょう。この映画では、現代東京の表面的な「奇妙な」姿が、この二人に目撃されたものとして、たくさん捕えられています。また、彼らが出会う日本人は、彼らにとってはほとんど何の意味も持ってこない壁のような存在です。日本は、このタイトルが意味しているように、翻訳のなかで失われて、理解が事実上不可能なものとして描かれています。
