First Film Group Meeting 最初の映画の会の集まり

Yesterday this year's first meeting for the Film Group was held after watching Tokyo Story. Six people joined it and I enjoyed the discussion very much!

昨日は、映画の会の今年初めての集まりが、 東京物語を見たあと、もたれました。６人が参加し、私自身、議論をとても楽しむことができました!

One person who joined the meeting by chance said that he watched the film for three

times　including this time. He said that this is one of his favorite films. I was also actually very much moved by the film. Apart from me, attendants were two British, one Turkish, one Spanish and one Canadian.

たまたま会に参加してくださったお一人は、今回を含めて三回この映画を見たとのことでした。これは彼の好きな映画の一つなのだとおっしゃっていました。実際のところ、私もこの映画にかなり心を動かされました。私以外の参加者は、イギリス人二人、トルコ人お一人、スペイン人お一人、そして、カナダ人お一人でした。

General comments presented about the film are the following:

• This film was a representation of that era.
• This film depicts just factual things. It was like just a documentary about old Japan.
• To know the past is important since it is the basis of current Japan.
• Ozu's static low camera position makes the audience feel like part of each scene. 
• The English translations were so sparse, and some conversations were not translated.
• The film shows Japanese ways of showing emotion: for example there are no scenes hugging each other there.
• The film shows the beginning of the rapid economic development in Japan and focuses on its negative impact on people's attitudes.

One article I felt very interesting about this film available in English is entitled 'Sunny Skies' written by Mr Shigehiko Hasumi, who was previously President to the Tokyo University (This was originally written in Japanese. I have not read the Japanese version). This article is in Ozu's Tokyo Story published in 1997 by Cambridge University Press. He criticises describing Ozu "very Japanese" is derived from 'a lack of understanding of his works'. (p.128)

この映画について、私がとても興味深いと感じた、英語で手に入る一つの論文は、以前に東京大学総長であった蓮実重彦さんによって書かれた、「晴れること」と題されたものです（元は日本語で書かれたもの。私はこの日本語版は読んでいません）。この論文は、１９９７年にケンブリッジ大学出版会より出版された、『小津の東京物語』に入っています。彼は、小津を「とても日本的だ」と説明するのは、「彼の作品への理解の欠如」からくるのだと批判しています。
