On the other hand, there has been also pointed out that Mr Ozu was so much influenced by American movies.

小津氏は、他方で、アメリカ映画から、相当の影響を受けていたとの指摘もあります。

A Japanese film critic, Mr Tadao Sato wrote about the connection between Tokyo Story and an American film in 1937 entitled 'Make Way for Tomorrow' as follows:

日本人映画評論家の佐藤忠男氏は、「東京物語」と１９３７年のアメリカ映画、「明日は来たらず」との関係を次のように書いていました。 

'A Paramount film in 1937, entitled "Make Way for Tomorrow" was a work which provided a basic idea for Ozu's "Tokyo Story". Neverthrless, Ozu did not watch the fillm when it was released in Japan since he was at war as a soldier. Kogo Noda watched this and made the story for "Tokyo Story" using its main point. ...  

We tend to consider films which depict everyday lives in this way as those like Japanese films. But in fact there has been such an  aspect in American film traditions since earlier periods, and those such as Yasujiro Ozu have been influenced by it in a way this aspect having been enlarged farther more.'

「一九三七年のパラマウント映画『明日は来たらず』は、小津の『東京物語』に基本的なアイデアを提供した作品である。もっとも、小津はこの映画が日本で封切られたときには兵隊に行って見ておらず、野田高梧がこれを見ていて、これを骨子にしてストーリーをつくったのである。

われわれは、日常生活をこういう調子で描いた作品を見ると、それを日本映画的であると考えるが、じつはアメリカ映画の伝統の中に古くからそういう一面があって、小津安二郎などはその一面をさらにいっそう拡大するかたちでそれに影響されているのである。」
