The director Yasujiro Ozu 1 小津安二郎監督 １

The name of the late Mr Yasujiro Ozu has been very well known in the world as a director in particular for Tokyo Story.

故小津安二郎氏の名前は、とりわけ「東京物語」の監督として、世界的にとてもよく知られています。

He was introduced into the western world as representing Japaneseness in the area of cinema since late 1950s. Mr Donald Richie is one of the writers who has introduced his films from this perspective. I would just quote how he depicted Mr Ozu's work from one of his articles published in 1959 below.

彼は、１９５０年代後半以降、映画という分野において、日本らしさを代表しているものとして、西洋世界に紹介されてきました。ドナルド・リチーさんは、彼の映画をこうした視点から紹介してきておられる書き手のお一人です。以下に、１９５９年に出版された彼の論文の一つから、どのように小津氏の作品を、彼が描いておられるかを引用してみましょう。

'This very Japaneseness of Ozu's approach, intuitive rather than analytic, the emphasis upon effect rather than cause, emotive rather than intellectual, is what - coupled with his marvelous metamorphosis of the Japanese aesthetic into images visible on film - makes him the most Japanese of all directors.'
