Thought about 'Christmas' 「クリスマス」について思うこと

Today is Christmas day, one of the public holidays in Britain. There are full of messages on the TV today that Christmas day is a day to celebrate.   

今日は、クリスマスの日、イギリスでは、公的休日の一つです。今日テレビは、クリスマスはお祝いすべき日なんだ、とのたくさんのメッセージにあふれています。

In 1871 Bank Holidays Act was introduced as the first act ruled bank holidays. Christmas day was not included as bank holidays in this act for England, Wales, and Ireland at that time. At that time, for Scotland, Christmas day became one of the bank holidays. This act was replaced with a new act, Banking and Financial Dealings Act in 1971. This regulates current bank holidays, and Christmas has yet not been a bank holiday in England,  Wales、and Northern Ireland, but in reality it has been given the position of a public holiday in this act.    

１８７１年に銀行休業日法が、銀行休業日を規定した最初の法律として導入されました。クリスマスは、このとき、イングランド、ウェールズ、アイルランドについては、この法律では銀行休業日としては含まれていませんでした。スコットランドについては、クリスマスは、銀行休業日の一つとされました。この法律は１９７１年に、新しい法律、銀行業と金融取引法によって取って代わられました。これが現在の銀行休業日を規制していますが、クリスマスは、やはりイングランド、ウェールズ、北アイルランドでは、銀行休業日の中に含まれていませんが、この法律では、事実上、公的休日としての位置づけを与えられています。 

I could see here some kinds of hesitations to make Christmas overtly as a public holiday. Even in Scotland Christmas is a bank holiday which should be just related to financial activities. Neverthless, all the TV programmes treat Christmas as if it is a national holiday. If you neither enjoy nor celebrate Christmas you are almost like an outcast. 

ここには、クリスマスを明確に、公的休日とすることへの、ある種の躊躇が現れているのを見てとることができます。スコットランドにおいてさえ、クリスマスは、単に金融上の活動にかかわるはずの銀行休業日です。にもかかわらず、すべてのテレビ番組は、クリスマスを国民の休日であるかのように取り扱っています。もし、あなたが、クリスマスを楽しまないか、祝わないならば、あたかも、はみ出しもののようです。
