Film Night 映画の夜

Last night I had a film night at Forest Cafe, Edinburgh, from 6pm. The film watched was 'Nausicaa of the valley of the wind'.

昨晩、午後６時から、エディンバラのフォレスト・カフェで映画の夜を持ちました。見た映画は、「風の谷のナウシカ」でした。

This was the first time to have the film group in this way. Around 30 people watched the film. Some people happened to be there and watched the film. I at least talked to two such people. However, since the Cafe's kitchen is in the hall the film was screened, it was difficult to avoid some noises. It also made difficult watching the film that a person started talking to somebody in a mobile.  

こうした形で映画の会をもつのははじめてでした。約３０人の方が、映画をみてくださいました。中には、たまたまやってきて、映画を見てくださった方もいました。そういう方に少なくともお二人お会いしました。ですが、カフェのキッチンは映画が上映されたホールの中にあるため、騒音を避けることが困難でした。また、携帯で話す方もいて、それも映画鑑賞を少し困難にしました。

After the film although many people left, apart from me 7 people stayed and discussed the film. They are 2 from Spain, 1 from Taiwan, 2 from England, 1 from Russia, 1 from Turkey. Various interesting opinions were presented in the discussions.

映画のあと、たくさんのかたが去られたのですが、私以外には、７人の方が残り、映画について議論をしました。スペインから２人、台湾から１人、イギリスから２人、ロシアから１人、トルコから１人の方たちでした。さまざまな、興味深い意見が議論では出されていました。

On why the main character was a teenage girl：

• The director and author, Mr Hayao Miyazaki probably set a character completely different from him to convey his messages more effectively.
• Innocent and pure views were considered necessary to send a strong message to the status quo.
• To give the film a more magical effect.
• To send a positive message to young people that they could do something to change the current world.
• *To make the film just a fantasy. This could have a negative effect to make people think that Nausicaa's idea would never be realised in the real world.  

なぜ、主人公が、１０代の少女だったのか、について：

• 映画の著者及び監督である宮崎駿さんは、おそらく、より効果的に彼のメッセージを伝えるために、彼とはまったく異なった人物を設定した。
• 純粋無垢な視点が現状に対する強いメッセージを送るためには、必要だと考えた。
• 映画に、より魔法のような効果を与えるため。
• 現状の世界を変えるために何か出来ることがあるのだと、若者に積極的なメッセージを送るため。
• ＊映画を単なる空想にするため。このため、ナウシカの考えは、現実世界では決して実現しないと人々に思わせる否定的な効果を持つことにもなっている。

On where the valley was modeled after:

• Kyoto in Japan from its geographical similarity
• Possible that the valley modeled Japan. Because the idea of the valley's people believing in a god of the wind has a similarity with the idea of a God Wind (kamikaze). It is also because Nausicaa's ideas could be viewed symbolising Japan's constitution not using the military power as a means to solve international conflict. If so (in connection with the opinion shown at the mark *), it seems that this film indirectly suggests that this idea can live only in a fantasy.
• The valley could be anywhere.  

谷は、どこをモデルとしているのか：

• その地形的な類似性から日本の京都。
• 谷は、日本をモデルにしている可能性。というのは、風の神を信じるという谷の人々の考えは、神風という発想と類似しているから、また、ナウシカの思想は、軍事力を国際的な紛争を解決するための手段としては用いないとしている日本の憲法を象徴していると見ることができるから。もしそうだとすると（＊の意見とつなげて）、この映画は、間接的に、この思想は、空想の中でのみ活きるのだと暗示しているようである。
• 谷はどこででもありうる。

Other opinions:

• Too much focus was given to the relationships between Nausicaa and insects. Elements more focused on human relationships were necessary. For example, conflicts among people and more words from people in the valley could have been depicted.  
• How to interprete the film was left to our own imaginations.
• This film seems to be based on Shinto, considering Nausicaa's worship in nature.
• Ecological messages of this film are more relavant even though this film was made more than 20 years ago.  

他に出された意見：

• あまりにも、ナウシカと虫たちの関係に焦点が当てられすぎていた。人間関係により視点をあてた要素が必要だった。例えば人間たちの間での不調和や、谷の人々の中でのさらなる意見などが描かれ得た。
• 映画をどう解釈するかが、私たちのイマジネーションに任されている。
• この映画は、ナウシカの自然信仰を考えるなら、神道に依拠しているように思える。
• この映画の環境保護的なメッセージは、２０年以上前に作られた映画にもかかわらず、そのとき以上に今日的意義あるものだ。
