Music and Art Party 音楽と芸術のパーティ

The Japanese Singing Group performed for the first time in front of an audience at the Edinburgh Japanese Church Music and Art Party (see below about the host of the event) on 14 November, as I wrote in the previous article in this blog.

日本語合唱団は、前回のブログで記しましたように、１１月１４日にエディンバラ日本語教会の音楽と芸術のパーティで（主催者については以下を参照）、聴衆のまえで初めて歌いました。

There were around 60 people at the party. I met 　people from Korea, China, Japan, Germany, the USA, and Britain there. There seem to  have been also people from Singapore, Russia and Taiwan.   

パーティには約６０人のかたがおられました。私は会場で、韓国、中国、日本、ドイツ、アメリカ、イギリスからこられた方々とお会いしました。シンガポール、ロシア、そして台湾からの方もいらっしゃったようでした。

As far as I recorded, ten groups presented their performances: singing to his own guitar accompaniment; ensemble of violine, harp and accordion; duet of flute and electronic piano/ singing to her own electric guitar accompaniment; harp duet; playing the electronic piano by two people; harmonica; singing to an electronic piano accompaniment; singing to a Korean musical instrument accompaniment/ duet of violine and the electronic piano; duet of saxophone and the electronic piano and our singing. Each group's performance had an attraction. I was in particular impressed by the singing of a high school student from Korea and by the duet of young harpists.   

私の記録によれば、１０のグループがそれぞれのパーフォーマンスを披露されました。ギターの弾き語り、バイオリン、ハープ、アコーディオンの合奏、フルートと電子ピアノの二重奏・電子ギターの弾き語り、ハーモニカ、電子ピアノの伴奏での歌、韓国の楽器の伴奏での歌・バイオリンと電子ピアノの二重奏、サクソフォンと電子ピアノの二重奏、そして私たちの歌でした。 それぞれの方々のパーフォーマンスに魅力がありましたが、私はとりわけ、韓国人の高校生の方の歌と、こどもたち二人によるハープ演奏が心に残りました。

The party's presenters were Mr Sam Kawamura, and Mr Stephen Clipsham. The party started with a prayer by Mr JaeHun Park and finished with a prayer by Mr Stephen Williams. The Edinburgh Japanese Church wholly supported the party in various ways. The Edinburgh Japanese Church has been positively promoting the understanding of Japanese cultures and has created a Japanese community in Edinburgh. Of course, the future Japanese Institute of Scotland would be an institute which is open to everybody regardless of religious faith, but at the same time I hope it could work in association with different religious groups. As one of such important groups I hope the Japanese Institute of Scotland could work together with them. I really appreciate that Mr Clipsham invited the Japanese Singing Group to the party and gave us the first opportunity to sing in front of an audience. 

パーティの司会者は、川村サム（澄人）さんと、ステファン・クリップシャムさんでした。パーティはジェフン・パクさんのお祈りではじまり、スティーブン・ウィリアムズさんのお祈りで終わりました。エディンバラ日本語教会は、エディンバラで日本文化の理解を促進し、日本人コミュニティを積極的に創ってこられているグループです。将来のスコットランド日本会館は、もちろん、宗教にかかわりなく誰もが参加できる機関であるわけですが、同時に様々な宗教的なグループとも協力して活動できればと考えています。その大事な一つとして、日本語教会とも、共に活動できればと望んでいます。クリップシャムさんが日本語合唱団をパーティに招待してくださり、聴衆の前で歌う初めての機会を私たちに与えてくださったことに本当に感謝いたします。

Jamie, Fumie and I, sang two songs in harmony, 'Furusato(hometown)' arranged by Fumie, and the other song kindly arranged by Ms Calyn Tsukishima, who is a Japanese professional musician currently living in London. For the second song, following Calyn's singing recorded and her advice that 'it is important to sing with an image in your mind', we practiced on 12 November and just before the party started. Some of the group's members, not having being able to sing at the party, helped us to improve the singing by giving us comments and encouragement. Thanks to all of these, I consider that we somehow managed to express the heart of both songs. In particular, Jamie's solo was amazing! I would like to thank again to Calyn's warm support to us!!

ジェイミーさん、史恵さん、私の三人は、二つの歌を、コーラスをつけて歌いました。一つは、史恵さんが編曲してくださった「故郷」、そしてもう一つは、現在ロンドン在住の、日本人のプロの音楽家でいらっしゃる月嶋カリンさんがコーラスのアレンジをしてくださった歌でした。二つ目の歌については、録音してくださっていたカリンさんの歌ったもの、また、彼女の、「歌は、イメージして歌うことが大切」、とのアドバイスもいただき、１１月１２日に、また、ちょうどパーティが始まる前に練習をしました。グループのメンバーの何人かは、パーティでは歌えなかったものの、歌を一層よくするよう、コメントや、励ましを与えてくれました。これらのおかげで、なんとか、歌の心を表現できたのではないかと思いました。とりわけ、ジェイミーさんのソロは素晴らしかったです！あらためてカリンさんの温かいご支援に感謝いたします！！

However, just after we performed someone remarked that my reference to the World War II and the Yasukuni shrine was not considerate about the feelings of people who were tortured by Japanese. I myself tried to convey the fact that there are many Japanese who would not want to repeat a similar mistake as Japanese did in the past towards people in other Asian countries, but I also felt that my explanation was not clear enough to convey that. At the end of all the performances, having been allowed by Mr Kawamura, I apologised to those offended by my explanations. 

ですが、私たちの歌のすぐあと、ある方から、私の第二次世界大戦と靖国神社への言及は、日本人によって苦しめられた人々の感情への配慮がないものだ、との発言がありました。私自身は、過去に他のアジアの国の人々に対し日本人がしたような、似た間違いを繰り返したくないと思っている多くの日本人がいるのだ、という事実を伝えようと試みたつもりでした。ですが、私自身、私の説明が、その意図を伝えるに、十分に明瞭だったわけではなかったのだと感じました。すべてのパフォーマンスの終わりに、川村さんに許していただき、会場にいる方にむけて、私の説明によって気分を害された方々に謝罪を表明しました。

Thankfully I talked to many people about this incident while the buffet meal was served after the performance. The conversations were really valuable and I have learned a lot from them. Mr Park's suggestion was particularly helpful. He told me that without a proper and careful explanation, Chinese and Korean people could easily be offended by the reference by a Japanese on the World War II and the Yasukuni shrine. I really feel Japanese should make a big effort to understand how Chinese and Korean people feel about what the Japanese did to them in the past in depth.  

ありがたいことに、ビュッフェ形式の食事がパフォーマンスのあとにふるまわれた際、この出来事については、多くのかたとお話をしました。 会話はとても価値があるもので、多くのことを会話から学びました。特に、パクさんのご提案は有益なものでした。彼は、適切で、注意深い説明なしには、中国人や韓国人は、日本人による第二次世界大戦や靖国神社への言及によって、容易に気分を害するだろうといっておられました。日本人は、中国人や韓国人の方が、過去に日本人が彼らに対してしたことについてどのように感じているのかを、深いところで理解する大きな努力をするべきなのではないかと、私自身本当に感じます。
