The fourth meeting of the Singing Group 合唱団４回目の集まり

We had 10 members in the fourth meeting of the Japanese Singing Group held on 5 November! A surprise was that Ms Calyn Tsukishima, a professional Japanese musician in the pop music, arranged a song for us to　sing with harmony.  

１１月５日にもたれた日本語合唱団の４回目の集まりには、１０人の方が参加してくださいました！一つの大きな驚きは、ポップ音楽の分野での、プロの日本の音楽家である月嶋カリンさんが、私たちのために、コーラスをつけて歌うために、ある歌のアレンジをしてくださったことでした。

On this day we had four new members, an Icelander female, with her 10 years old daughter, a Spanish person, and a Japanese. The rest includes a Japanese female who married with a British person, with her 9 years old daughter, one British student, one student whose mother is Japanese, and two Japanese including me. 

この日は、 ４人の新しいメンバーを迎えました。アイスランド人の女性、その１０歳の娘さん、そして、スペイン人お一人と日本人お一人でした。 後は、イギリス人の方と結婚された日本人の女性、その９歳の娘さん、イギリス人の学生、母親が日本人の学生、そして、私を含む二人の日本人でした。

First two matters were informed. One was whether we could sing in a party to be held on 14 November. This party is organised and suggested by Mr Stephan Clipsham, who once attended a volunteers' meeting to set up the Japanese Institute of Scotland. At that time only three including me confirmed they could attend and two were not sure. I hope more people could join us to sing on 14 November. We would specially practice on 12 November, Thursday, from 7pm to prepar for the party.

はじめに、二つの報告がありました。一つは、１１月１４日に持たれる、あるパーティで、私たちが、歌うことができるだろうかということでした。このパーティは、スコットランド日本会館を設立するためのボランティアの集まりに一度参加してくださったステファン・クリップシャムさんによって企画され、提案していただいたものです。この時点では、私をいれた３人のみの参加が確認でき、二人のかたは、まだわからない、とのことでした。この１１月１４日に歌うことに向けて、より多くの方が参加してくださることを願っています。特別に、このパーティにむけての準備のため、１１月１２日の木曜日、午後７時から練習をする予定です。

The other matter was that Calyn-san has arranged a song for us to sing with harmonies. She sent me music files. I was so much moved and impressed by listening to them. Something really reached to my heart. Then, Fumie-san, a member of the group put music notes of the harmonies to the staff. She, who learned playing the electronic organ for long years, said to me that the arrangement was beautiful and this is certainly a professional's job.  

もう一つのことは、月嶋カリンさんが、コーラスで歌えるよう、私たちのために、ある歌のアレンジをしてくださったということでした。そして、私に、音楽ファイルを送ってくださいました。これを聞いて、私は、とても感動し、感銘を受けました。何かが本当に私の心に届いたのでした。そして、合唱団のメンバーの一人である史恵さんが、コーラスの部分の音符を、譜面へと書き取ってくれました。エレクトーンを長く習っていたという彼女は、アレンジが美しく、さすがプロの仕事だ、と言っていました。

On this day we only practiced two songs, Furusato (hometown) which Fumie-san has arranged and the song Calyn-san has arranged. Before singing each song, I briefed its background and we worked out the meaning of the lyrics together. For Furusato, the new members sung the melody and the rest sang the harmony we practiced in the previous meeting. Some found difficult to sing the melody since they felt the tone was too high. For the other song, we practiced only the lower harmony Calyn-san prepared since not much time was left. All tried to sing together with Calyn-san's singing for the lower part and following Fumie-san's singing. Then while Jamie-san sung the melody, the rest sang the lower harmony. Although that was not perfect, we managed to make a harmony and it was beautiful!

この日は、史恵さんがアレンジしてくださった故郷と、カリンさんがアレンジしてくださった歌を練習したのみでした。それぞれの歌を歌う前に、私が、歌の簡単な背景を説明し、その後、歌詞の意味をみんなで、つかみました。故郷については、新しいメンバーが主旋律を歌い、残りの人たちが、前回の集まりで練習した副旋律を歌いました。幾人かは、音程が高すぎるということで、主旋律を歌うのに苦労していました。もう一つの歌については、時間がそんなに残っていなかったため、カリンさんが用意してくださった低いコーラス部分のみを練習しました。全員が、カリンさんが低い部分を歌ってくださっていたのに添いながら、また、その後、史恵さんが歌うのを追いかけるかたちで歌ってみました。そして、主旋律をジェイミーさんが歌われ、残りの人たちが、低い方のコーラスを歌いました。完璧ではありませんでしたが、何とかハーモニーを作ることができ、そして、それは、とても美しかったです！

• Good value for 50p (Atsuko's comments: I am afraid I would have to increase the room fees to £1.50 from the next session to recover the deficit.)
• It reminded me of Japan.

A member who had attended previous meetings added that 'it was nice to sing in a bigger group'. I felt excited to sing the song which Calyn-san had arranged.   

新しいメンバーのコメントは次の通りです。

• 他の人の歌声を聞けて良かった。
• ５０ペンスにしては、とても価値がある。（厚子のコメント：もうしわけないのですが、赤字を取り戻すために、次の集まりから、部屋代を１ポンド５０ペンスに上げさせていただかないといけないだろうと思っています。）
• 日本を思い出した。

あるこれまでの集まりに参加してくださっているメンバーの方は、「大きなグループで歌えて良かった」と加えていました。私自身は、カリンさんがアレンジしてくださった歌を歌うことに、わくわくするようでした。
