Edinburgh University Japanese Society's Film Night

Yesterday I attended the Edinburgh University Japanese Society's Film Night held at the Brass Monkey in Drummond Street, Edinburgh. It started at 8.30pm and we watched a film entitled 'Zatōichi' directed by Mr Takeshi Kitano.

昨日、エディンバラ、ドラモンドストリートにある、Brass Monkeyで開かれたエディンバラ大学ジャパニーズ・ソサエティの映画ナイトに参加してきました。会は、午後８時半に始まり、北野武さん監督の「座頭市」と題された映画を見ました。

He became well known world-wide in particular through his 1997 film entitled 'Hanabi', the winner of the Golden Lion awad at the Venice Film Festival. 'Zatōichi' is a well known Japanese fictitious action figure in films chiefly in the 1960s and in TV series in the 1970s. 'Ichi' is his personal name and 'ｚatō' indicates he belongs to the guild of the blind existed in Edo era. Zatōichi has a wooden stick to support for his walk, but this acutually hides a sword inside which is used to fight against.   

彼は、とりわけ、ヴェニス映画祭での金獅子賞を受賞した、彼の、１９９７年の「花火」と題された映画を通じて、世界的に知られるようになりました。「座頭市」は、主に１９６０年代に映画で、また、１９７０年代には、テレビシリーズで、よく知られた日本の想像上のアクションものの人物です。「市」は、彼の個人的な名前で、「座頭」は江戸時代に存在していた、目に不自由がある人々のギルド（同業組合）に属していることを示唆しています。座頭市は、彼の歩きを助けるため、木製の杖を持っています。ですが、実は、この内部には、闘うために使われる刀が隠されているのです。

This film is set in the Edo period. Honestly saying, I often struggled to find meaningful explanations why Zatōichi, whose role was played by the director Kitano himself, needed to kill everybody belonging to his enemy in each scene. The story was simply that those who have skills to use swards fight to protect those who haven't. In terms of this point, there seems to be a certain similarity between this film and 'Seven Samurai' which was directed by Mr Akira Kurosawa, despite of differences of the setting of locations: the former in a town and that of the latter in a village.  

この映画は、江戸期を舞台としています。正直なところ、私は、なぜ、北野監督自身によって演じられた、座頭市が、おのおのの場面で、彼の敵側に属していたすべての人を殺す必要があったのか、意味ある解釈を見出すことにしばしば苦しみました。物語は、簡単には、刀を使う技能を持つ人々が、持たない人々を守るために闘うということでした。この点では、前者は町に、後者は村の設定という点で、場所の設定に違いはあるものの、この映画と、黒澤明監督の「七人の侍」との間には、かなりの類似点があるように思われます。 

At the final scene of Zatōichi, the town's people showed joy getting rid of a group of 'gangstars' which was closely tied with a wealthy merchant, with tap-dancing. In 'Seven Samurai' the villagers also celebrated their safety and peace after a fight in traditional dancing with songs. When this film was screened in Japan in 1954, a film critique, Mr Tadao Sato stated that watching the film he considered that Mr Kurosawa was trying to say that we need a defence army in Japan. In fact the year of 1954 was when the defence army was set up upgrading the previous police preparation  unit despite of an artilce of the Japanese Constitution, which declares not having any army as a means of solving international conflicts.

「座頭市」の最後の場面では、町の人々は、タップダンスをしながら、裕福な商人と密接に組んでいた「やくざ」の一団から逃れられた喜びを表現していました。「七人の侍」でも、村人は、闘いのあとの安全と平和を、音楽と伝統的な踊りで祝っていました。この映画が１９５４年に日本で上映されたときに、映画評論家の佐藤忠男さんは、この映画を見て、黒澤さんは、自衛隊の必要を述べようとしているのだと思ったと述べていました。実は、この年には、日本国憲法の、いかなる戦力をも保持しない宣言にもかかわらず、以前の警察予備隊を格上げして、自衛隊が創られていました。

'Zatōichi' also showed town's people regained peaceful life only relying on those who could use arms. In 2003 when this film was released, the then prime minister Junichiro Koizumi　sent the Japan's defence army to Iraq war. There was a strong opposition in Japan since this was considered as the first occasion where the army was sent to an area where a war was going on. Missing of reasons why this is necessary, for example, killing every enemy at a scene, seems to suggest the following: as if telling us that you don't have to worry too much even if many people were killed without meaning as far as you are safe and can keep peace. 

「座頭市」もまた、町の人々は、武器を使える人々に依拠してのみ、平和を取り戻せたことを表現していました。この映画が封切りされた、２００３年は、当時の小泉純一郎首相が、イラク戦争に、自衛隊を送った年でした。この派遣は、戦闘地域へ自衛隊がはじめて送られたとして、強い反対の声も日本国内にありました。なぜ、これが必要なのかの、例えば、ある場面でのすべての敵を殺すことについて、理由が抜けていることは、あたかも、次のようなことを私たちに伝えようとしているようです。たとえ、多くの人が意味なく殺されたとしても、あなたが安全で、平和を維持できるのでありさえすれば、あまり心配すべきではない、ということです。

This is the first film for me to watch Mr Kitano's films. The Brass Monkey's room for films　was 　packed on that night. My Yu Maruyama, the president to the Edinburgh University Japanese Society, prepared this screening. I really enjoyed the film night! They have a pub meeting every Wednesday from 8.30pm.
