Film Group's Meeting 映画の会の集まり

Yesterday the third meeting of the Film Group was held at the Filmhouse Cafe Bar after watching a film entitled 'The Ceremony' by the director Nagisa Oshima screened at the Filmhouse.

昨日、映画の会の三回目の集まりが、フィルムハウスで上映された、大島渚監督による「儀式」という映画を見たあと、フィルムハウスのカフェバーで開かれました。

There were in total 6 people including me participated. Two were postgraduate students in film studies at the University of Edinburgh, who are originally from Greece. One was a British editor working in a science magazine.  There was also a couple of a British and a Turk who joined me in the previous meeting. They are graphic designers. All felt that this film was one of the best films directed by Oshima that they had wathced so far. Some watched six films of his. One attendant said that she felt that with this film Oshima would have known what exactly he was doing.

全体では、私を含めて６人のかたが、参加してくださいました。二人は、ギリシャからもともと来られた、エディンバラ大学の映画研究科で、学んでいる大学院生でした。一人は、科学雑誌で働いておられるイギリス人の編集者の方でした。また、前回の集まりに私に加わってくださった、イギリス人とトルコ人のカップルのかたでした。彼らは、グラフィック・デザイナーです。全員が合意したのは、これまで見た大島が監督した映画の中で最も良いものの一つだということでした。何人かは、彼の６つの映画を見ていました。ある参加者は、この映画については、大島は、正確に自分が何をしているのか、わかっていたのではないかと感じたと述べていました。 

Yesterday's meeting was filled with lively discussions. There were several points which divided the opinions of the attendants. These included the following:

• whether the main character, Masuo, has homosexual tendency in his.
• whether Masuo is really able to start a new way of living different from those who left him, when he was left alone at the end of the film.

昨日の集まりは、活発な議論にあふれていました。参加者の意見を二分したいくつかのポイントの中には、次のような点がありました。

• 主人公、満洲男には、ホモセクシャルの傾向があるのかどうか。
• 映画の最後で一人残された満洲男は、彼を去った人々とは違った、新しい生き方を本当にはじめることができるのか。

One who also attended the previous meeting pointed out that Mauo in this film really overapped with Oshima himself. In fact, it seems to be that the film "Kyoto, My Mother's Place" can be a suitable introduction to watch "The Ceremony" since several important aspects of Oshima's autobiographical story in the former are quite similar to Masuo's backgrounds in the latter. 

前回の集まりにもいたある方が、この映画の満洲男は、かなり、大島自身と重なっているのではと指摘されました。実際のところ、映画「京都、私の母の場所」は、「儀式」を見るうえでの、適切な導入になりうるように思えました。というのは、前者での大島の自伝的な語りでふれられた、大事ないくつかの側面は、後者での満洲男の背景とかなり似ているからです。

On the other hand it would be important to do an extra study not only for non-Japanese but also for Japanese who have never experienced the same period with Oshima in order to understand "The Ceremony" properly. I consider this film is worth while doing this effort since this film captures how Japan was considered in a very serious way by someone who spent his childhood in the transition from the pre-war to the post-war period.

他方で、日本人ではない人たちにとって、また、大島と同じ時代背景を経験していない日本人にとっては、「儀式」を適切に理解するためには、特別な学習が、大事なのではないでしょうか。私は、この映画には、その努力をする価値があると思うのです。というのは、この映画には、戦前から戦後の移行の時期に子ども期を過ごした人による、かなり真剣なかたちでの、日本の考察が、とてもよく表現されているからです。

At the end of the meeting, someone suggested if we could have Oshima's talk about his own films. Even if this is impossible, I hope to organise an alternative talk possibly after watching these two films in the near future.

集まりの終わりに、ある人が、大島の、彼自身の映画についての話が聞けたらいいのになあと提案されました。たとえこうした形が不可能でも、その代わりになるような講演を、近い将来、可能なら、これら二つの映画を見た後に、企画できればなあと私自身思いました。
