The Film Group's meeting 映画の会の集まり　

The second meeting of the Film Group was held yesterday after watching a film entitled 'Kyoto, My Mother's Place' by the director Nagisa Oshima. Since this film has not been screened nationwide in Japan, for many Japanese this film has not been well known.

映画の会の第二回目の集まりが、昨日、大島渚監督による「京都、私の母の場所」という映画を見たあともたれました。この映画は、日本では全国的には上映されておらず、多くの日本人にも余り知られていないものです。

Before the screening at the Filmhouse the producer John Archer of the series entitled "The Director's Place" to which this film was contributed talked about his experience working with Mr Oshima. He said that this series aimed to show the autobiography of directors in films. Among the series he said that this and Linsay Anderson's are his favorite. One of the interesting episodes he mentioned was that when he visited Kyoto Mr Oshima explained to him "The Maiko is not a prostitute." "The Maiko" is the word used in Kyoto to mean in reality young "Geisha" which word normally has been used in Tokyo.

フィルムハウスでの上映の前には、この映画が提供された「監督たちの場所」と題されたシリーズの製作者ジョン・アーチャーさんが、大島監督と仕事をした経験を語られました。このシリーズは、監督たちの自伝を映画で描くことに目的があったと彼は述べられました。シリーズの中で、この映画とリンジイ・アンダーソンのものが彼の好きな作品であるとのことでした。彼が触れた興味深いエピソードの一つは、彼が京都を訪れた時、大島監督が「舞妓は、売春婦ではない」と彼に説明したということでした。「舞妓」というのは、東京で通常使われる、事実上、若い「芸者」を意味して、京都で使われる言葉です。

At the meeting where unfortunately only two people joined me interesting opinions were conversed. In terms of the form of the film:

• Considering other Oshima's films, this film was mild mannered and thoughtful
• Did not expect this from the image of his other films
• Quite separate from films he made. There was no reference to his own films.
• Hoped　to see more details of his upbringing.
• Showed one aspect of Kyoto, which carries the tradition to the present time and, at the same time, because of this, neither free individuals nor make them happy.

残念なことに、たった二人の方が私に加わってくださっただけでしたが、会では、興味深い意見が出されました。映画の形式については、

• 大島の他の映画のことを考えると、この映画は、行儀穏やかで、思いやりのあるものだった。
• 彼の他の映画のイメージからは、この映画を想像できなかった。
• 彼が作った映画からまったく分離している。彼自身の映画には何の言及もなかった。
• 彼の子供時代の教育についてより詳しく知りたかった。
• 現代まで伝統をとどめており、と同時に、それゆえに、個人を解放せず、彼らを幸福にはしないという、京都の一つの側面を示していた。

In terms of the story of the film:

• This would have been his tribute to his mother who made who he is.
• Oshima was trapped and forced by Kyoto how he is. (Atsuko's note: Mr Oshima described Kyoto in the film as a symbol of old Japan.)
• Strong female characters in his films, which is different from others' films, probably came from his mother's strength

映画のストーリーについては、

• これは、彼が何者であるかを形作った彼の母親への感謝を示したものだったのではないか。
• 大島は、京都によって、彼がどうであるかを決められ、強いられた。（厚子の注：大島さんは、映画の中で、京都を、古い日本を象徴するものと表現していました。）
• 他の映画とは違った、彼の映画の中での強い女性登場人物は、多分彼の母の強さから来ていたのでは。

I myself have watched only a few films of his. But I thought Mr Oshima hoped to challenge every element of Japan which he considered actually takes freedom and happiness from people. 

私自身は、彼の映画の、一、二本しか見ていません。ですが、大島さんは、実際に人々から自由と幸福を奪うと考えられた、日本のあらゆる要素に対して挑戦をいどみたかったのではないかと思いました。

The final screening of the series of Oshima's films in the Filmhouse is on 26 October, Monday, from 5.45pm. The title of the film is "The Ceremony" (Gishiki). According to the programme of the Filmhouse, this film has been 'widely acclaimed as Oshima's most ambitious film' and deals with the history of postwar Japan up to around 1970. The third meeting of the Film Watching Group is to be held after watching this film at its Cafe Bar. I hope many people can join me!

フィルムハウスの大島映画のシリーズの最後の上映は１０月２６日（月曜日）の午後５時４５分からです。映画の題名は、「儀式」です。フィルムハウスのプログラムによれば、この映画は、「大島の最も野心的な映画として広く賞賛されて」おり、１９７０年ごろまでの戦後日本の歴史を対象として扱っているということです。映画を見る会の第三回目の集まりは、そこのカフェバーにてこの映画を見たあと開かれます。たくさんのかたにご参加いただけることを願っております。
