One day visit to London ロンドンへの一日訪問

I visited London on 7 Obtober and enjoyed talking to interesting individuals.  It was really an intensive day, but I received so much encouragement from all the people I met.  

１０月７日にロンドンを訪問し、興味深い方々とのお話を、楽しんできました。本当に集中した一日でしたが、お会いしたどなたからもたくさんの励ましを受けました。

I met Ms Junko Takekawa, Senior Arts Programme Officer, and Mr Takashi Ishida, Director-General, both at the Japan Foundation, London Office in the morning. Then I visited the Japan Society to meet Ms Heidi Potter, its Chief Executive, and moved to meet Mr Daisuke Tsuchiya, Deputy Director of Japan Information and Cultural Centre, Embassy of Japan. I then met Ms Calyn Tsukishima, professional Japanese musician, who sent me a warm message in relation to the Japanese Singing Group. Finally I attended a regular meeting of the directors of the Japanese Residents Association UK (JRA) at the office of the Nippon Club as an observer.

国際交流基金ロンドン日本文化センターの竹川純子芸術プログラム上級委員と石田隆司所長に午前中にお会いしました。そのあと、日本協会を訪問し、ハイディ・ポッター事務局長とお会いし、また移動して、在英国日本国大使館の、土屋大輔広報文化センター次長にお会いしました。そして、日本語合唱団にかかわって温かいメッセージを送ってくださったプロの日本人音楽家・月嶋カリンさんにお会いしました。最後に、日本クラブ事務所で開かました英国日本人会の定期理事会にオブザーバーとして参加させていただきました。

The original purpose of this trip was to attend the directors' meeting of the JRA. Mr Takeshi Shimizu, a director of the JRA, who I met in Edinburgh, invited me to attend the meeting and Mr Izumi Kurosawa, secretary of the JRA, accepted me to attend it. At the meeting, Mr Keisaku Sano, chairman of the JRA, and other directors attended there all welcomed me warmly. I was given time to explain the situation setting up the Japanese Institute of Scotland at the end of the meeting by Mr Kurosawa's acceptance to my request. I received many valuable suggestions and opinions at the meeting and later at the restaurant where most of them moved for meal.

今回の旅のもともとの目的は、英国日本人会の理事会に参加させていただくことでした。エディンバラでお会いした、理事のお一人である、清水健さんが会に参加するよう招待してくださり、事務局長である黒澤泉さんが参加をお許しくださいました。会では、佐野圭作会長をはじめとして、他の参加されていた理事の方も、温かく私を迎えてくださいました。黒澤さんが私のご依頼を受け入れてくださり、会の最後には、スコットランド日本会館設立についての状況説明をさせていただく時間を与えていただきました。会で、またその後ほとんどの方が食事のために移動されたレストランでも、多くの価値あるご提案やご意見をいただくことができました。

My special thanks in this trip goes to Ms Calyn Tsukishima. Calyn-san sent me a message that she read the website of the Japanese Institute of Scotland and she is interested in the Japanese Singing Group. Honestly I was very much surprised by this, but was so moved and encouraged by her suggestion that she hopes to support the group musically. Unfortunately I did not her as a musician. But I have now learned that she is a musician in a major popular music scene in Japan. She became to be known through singing as a front actor in Misia's live concert at Nippon Budokan, Tokyo in 1998. She is also a song writer as well as a music composer. In 2000 she became the only Asian artist having done a live show in Body & Soul-NYC, which has been continuing since 1970s in New York. Last year, two famous songs 'Sweet Dreams' and 'Time after Time' which she recorded as part of a CD released in the UK reached the top in the UK download chart. 

今回の旅については、月嶋カリンさんに特に感謝いたしたく思います。カリンさんは、スコットランド日本会館のウェブサイトを読まれ、また、日本語合唱団に関心がおありになるとのメッセージを、送ってくださいました。正直なところ、とてもびっくりしたのですが、合唱団を音楽的に手助けしたいとのご提案に、たいへん感銘を受け、励まされもしました。残念ながら、私は彼女を音楽家としては存じ上げていませんでした。ですが、わかってきましたことには、彼女は、日本のメジャーのポップ音楽シーンの只中にいらっしゃる音楽家だということです。１９９８年、東京の日本武道館でのMisiaさんのライブコンサートで、フロント・アクトで歌ったことを通じて知られるようになられました。彼女は、また作詞家でもあり、作曲家でもあります。２０００年には、ニューヨークで１９７０年代以来続いているBody & Soul-NYCでライブをした唯一のアジア人ともなりました。昨年は、彼女がイギリスでリリースされたCDに収録した「Sweet Dreams」と「Time after Time」という二つの名曲を歌ったものが、UKダウンロードチャートの共に一位を獲得しました。

While thus being in a major music scene, Calyn-san is interested in supporting a singing group or singing the nursery rhyme. Her music interest developed through gospel music. I asked her how she might be able to help the Japanese Singing Group. Her suggestion was that she could have a concert in Edinburgh in conjunction with the Japanese Institute of Scotland.  Unfortunately we did not have enough time to talk about this idea in depth. But I really hope to realise this suggestion!

こうして、メジャーな音楽シーンの中におられるわけですが、カリンさんは、合唱団を助けたり、また童謡を歌うことにも関心を持っておられます。彼女の音楽への関心は、ゴスペル音楽を通じて育ててこられたとのことでした。日本語合唱団をどんな形でなら助けていただけるだろうか、お伺いしてみましたが、彼女の提案は、スコットランド日本会館と協力してエディンバラでコンサートをするのはどうかとのことでした。残念なことに、このアイデアについて深くお話する時間はありませんでした。ですが、このご提案をぜひ実現したいです！
