I start this blog to inform you in a more real time about how different current activities are going!

The first article is about how the first meeting of the Japanese Singing Group went.

最初は、日本語合唱団最初の日の様子です。

The first meeting of the Japanese Singing Group was held on 24 September. Before the meeitng I was informed that some who originally planned to come cannot actually attend it. Actually the attendants on that day were two Japanese including me, one French and one whose mother is Japanese. 

日本語合唱団の最初の集まりが９月２４日に持たれました。会の前に、もともと参加する予定であった幾人かのかたから参加できなくなったとの報告を受けました。実際のところ、当日の参加者は、日本人二人、フランス人一人、お母様が日本人という方お一人でした。

I asked why they attended the group. The answers are the following:　To have a relaxing time; to meet Japanese people; to sing loud Japanese songs

私は、なぜ、彼らが会に参加したのかをたずねました。答えは、次のようでした。

リラックスする時間を持ちたいから、日本人に会いたいから。日本語の歌を大声で歌いたいから。

In terms of days to meet, two of them said that they can attend in a different day. The other one said that she cannot attend on Thursdays afterwards. On this matter, I have finally decided dates based on the availability of a room at the Tollcross Community Centre, where you can rent a room with a very reasonable rate. I also suggested if anybody knows someone who could conduct the group, I would appreciate such an information.

集まる日については、二人は、違う日でも大丈夫だということでした。一人は、木曜日は今後参加できないとのことでした。この問題については、最終的には、部屋を相当安く借りることのできる、トルクロスコミュニティセンターの部屋の空き状況から日程を決めました。さらに、私は、もしどなたか合唱団を指揮してくださるようなかたを知っていたら、情報を寄せて欲しいと提案しました。

Afterwards, we first sang a song called 'Chorus of Frogs', originally a German folksong. The meaning of the lyrics was explained, then we practiced the song little by little, using an accompaniment downloaded as an MP3 onto my computer. In the end we sang a round in two groups and in four groups. The harmony was really nice! Then we also practiced a song called 'Flowers', composed and written in 1978 by Mr Shokichi Kina, who was born in Okinawa island. The backgroud and the meaning of the song were first explained. I explained that the main message of the song is 'let's have a flower rather than a weapon'. Retrospectively thinking, I should have encouraged to sing little by little for this song as well. There were reasons why I did not do that: I misunderstood that the ending time was 8pm; I felt difficulties to find a proper key to sing the song together; I could not prepare the music note. These are tasks to solve for the next meeting. But we sang together this song to the accompaniment of an MP3.

その後、最初に、もともとはドイツ民謡である「かえるの合唱」という歌を歌いました。歌詞の意味の説明の後、私のコンピューターにMP3としてダウンロードした伴奏を使いながら、少しずつ歌を練習しました。最後には、二つに分かれて、また４つに分かれて、輪唱をしました。ハーモニーが、とても良かったです！そのあと、沖縄出身の喜納昌吉さんの１９７８年作詞作曲の「花」という歌を練習しました。歌の背景と意味を最初に説明しました。私は、この歌の主なメッセージは、「武器より花を持とう」ということだと説明しました。今から振り返れば、私は、この歌についても、少しずつ歌うよう、うながすべきだったと思います。終わる時間を８時だと勘違いし、皆が歌える適切な音調を見出すことに難しさを感じたこと、また楽譜を準備できていなかったことが、これができなかった背景にはありました。これは次回への課題です。ですが、MP3の伴奏にそって、この歌を何回か一緒に歌いました。

My honest feeling was that we need a proper music expert to make progress to our singing and a proper music instrument, if possible. My way of leading the group on this day was not professional of course. Nevertheless I felt every attendant really enjoyed the singing, as I did indeed! 

私が正直に感じたことは、私たちの歌を上達させる適切な音楽の専門家が必要だということ、また、できれば、適切な楽器が必要だということでした。この日の私の指導は、もちろん専門家のようではありませんでした。それでも、私自身がそうであったように、参加者みなが、本当に歌うのを楽しんだと感じられるものでした！

The following is an opinion of one attendant, Ms Kazuko Sumino:

'I enjoyed opportunities to sing loud Japanese songs as I wish. I was pleased that people other than Japanese came. I knew the songs we sang. But for the people who were new to the songs wasn't it necessary to have the sheet music? It was nice that the background, and, the meaning, of the songs were explained .'   

以下のものは、参加者のお一人、角野和子さんの感想です。

「日本の歌を、思う存分、声を出して歌えて楽しかった。日本人以外の人も来てくれて嬉しかった。私は知っている歌だから大丈夫だったけれど、楽譜がないと歌いにくいのではないかと思った。歌詞の意味と歌の背景をちゃんと説明してくれたのは良かった。」
